Reasons for leaving... let me see.
1. Cost of living outstripping wages.
2. When did Portland become so liberal anyway?
3. Paying huge amounts of tax and getting virtually nothing for it.
4. Didn't we vote no on the North Light Rail expansion?
5. Why is Eric Sten still in office? (this will generate questions)
6. The weather. Just preference I like a little more sun in my life. = )
Just a few items that lead to my decision to move. I was also offered a chance to relocate with my company and I jumped at it. Still dont feel like it was a bad decision even after a year has passed.

3. People who enjoyed Portland's slower pace and more rural feel. It's still plenty slow and rural compared to San Francisco or Seattle, but those who yearn for the country are exploring southern Oregon, Idaho, etc.

Also those who are looking for long term stablity and funding solutions for education, whether it be K-12 or College.

I would add why is Sam Addams being given the mayor's race?

The recent posts by Minervah, GB1, and PDXmom pretty much nailed it. While Portland is still great if you are looking for a "city" with a liberal mentality and a lot of recreation opportunities, the job market is not keeping pace with the COL. The age discrimination thing is real too. I recently looked at a career change (mid-forties - the ol' mid-life crisis!) and found opportunities to be very limited. It also seemed that businesses I found myself working for were also VERY profit motivated with little or no respect for their clientele/customer. I found this profit-driven and consumerist attitude to be very disturbing. I'm now back in my old career, though in a new situation.
That said, I'm liberal and love the outdoors BUT... 1) I can't see getting ahead and being able to afford a larger home for my family in the current local job market. 2) While it's all relative, the traffic, crowding, COL, etc. is still getting to be too much for me. 3) The gray of fall/winter/spring would be a lot easier to take if there was a REAL winter with snow on the ground for at least a few weeks. As it is it's too monotonous and dreary. No it doesn't rain EVERY day, but it never really dries out either.
My preference at this point would be somewhere in the upper midwest.

We don't have 6 months of cold, but we do have 9 months when it's likely to be gray and cloudy a lot. Some people have serious trouble with that.
More important, there are no jobs here at the moment. If you come without enough money to live for a year or two without a job, you'll be living on the streets.

I don't think anyone who wants to move in blind faith really cares, no one believes the statistics...it will be a good learning experience.
