Well if getting rid of the varments isn't an option, you may offer to pay the higher insurance premium.
Keep them in a kennel in the back yard. If they are viewed as dangerous.
Give a larger cleaning deposit.
Or what some liberals do is call the ACLU and see if they will sue for some kind of personal freedom breach.

To LdyFlyFsh;
I have 5 first borns, that are far more valuable in spirit and form, than all the animals ever put into existence.
And I love animals, I actually have animals, I've had as many as 3 dogs, 15 horses, 20 chickens, goats, sheep, pigs. I currently have 2 pigs, An Angus steer (which I can't wait to eat.) a dog, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, I'm building a pond for fish.
One thing for sure, If I couldn't find a place to live that I could afford because of my animals, they would go in a heartbeat. Its fine to love animals, but to let them run your life or inconvenience it to the point of stress. Sorry not for me... and after all forums are for opinions.

Sorry Freedom, I'm pretty sure the rest of us who have pet animals would agree that we have pet animals for much the same reasons as those who have children want them in their lives: to love them, interact with them and care for them. Stress goes with the territory of love.

All of the efforts of the beginning of my working career were to buy a house solely so I could have a dog or two. No urban landlord would agree to my "I'll triple the damage deposit fee" proposal.

Default Pets and Renting

I did eventually find a house to rent- I begged the people at the managing office. I think that personally meeting with them helps(helped me find places to rent as well, when I was in L.A.) I think that if they see how you are face to face, they will trust you better. I told them I am a vet and my fiance is a dog trainer and that I have a toddler who is around the animals. The lady said she mentioned that last part to the owner and that made them accept me. And I'm very grateful. I do understand that if they damage something, I am responsible for it. The other thing that they recommended was to get renter's insurance. I already asked my car insurance company about it and said with the breeds I have, no one would cover us. But for those who have smaller foo-foo dogs, getting renter's insurance and telling possible landlords of this would help, I think.

Being in the animal field, I think it would be hard to imagine how my life would be without my animals. Almost everyday though, when I'm faced with the chaos of my son crying to be picked up and the animals all being in the kitchen and cleaning up after all of them, I sometimes wish I am all by myself with no one else to take care of. I think we just viewand value pets differently. My parents have told me to get rid of my pets a few times when I was faced with this problem a few times before. I think in the end, (my view of course) God always provides for me and saves the best for last.

Hopefully we won't have to stay here that long. I do want a house and yard of my own, do anything to the house and not have to worry about landlords and stuff.

Good luck to those who are going through this problem right now. I posted this to warn those who are planning to move with their pets this way, so they can have ample time to look around.

Gidget

Why do you call some animals pets and the others dinner? Raising and killing animals for food is a bloody business in which animals in factory farms are subjected to abuse that would warrant felony cruelty-to-animals charges if they were dogs or cats. I just saw on the news tonight that Butterball workers, for example, were documented punching and stomping on live turkeys, slamming them against walls, and worse during PETA's recent undercover investigation at a Butterball slaughterhouse. They mentioned a website called www.ButterballCruelty.com ...I'll be checking it out after I post this.

Not eating animals is the best way to help them.

Very hard to understand how an animal can effect living decisions.

Go ahead, let the venom begin.
No venom, but rather than letting my girl "go" to any random soul, I bought her a house when faced with new owners of the apartments we were living in at the time. Had I not found the right home, complete with fully fenced yard, I would have lived in my car with her before giving her away.

Lucky for me, I work at a top rated boarding kennel and never would have been pushed to living in the car, but I would have

Now, the vet who started this thread has a great point. If you're going to be moving and have pets and want to keep them as part of your family, do your research ahead of time, don't just count on all things coming together at the 11th hour.

well, Im probably gonna get hollered at, then shunned for this, but......
We had to move a few years ago, rather quickly, for the sake of my oldest child (2legged, not 4) Personal situations were as which it was a move that had to be done within less than 2months and we are not rich people. Obviously, had we had enough $$ and good enough credit, we would have loved to be able to buy a house right off the bat. But thats not us unfortunatly. We had 2full fishtanks, a parakeet, a parrot, and 2 dogs. One, we had had for about 5yrs and she is extra special because my husband got her for me when we lost a child. The other was very special as well, but was only about 8months old and yes, we loved her. We did a lot of calling around, begging and bribing, and the best we could do, was a place that would take all 5people, both tanks, both birds, but only one dog. The other downside, was we were moving from a place on about 80acreas, to a 600sqft duplex w/a yard that was smaller than my dining room was. Our older dog is a terrier mix, and surprisingly calm and rather lazy. The puppy, was a miniture austrailian shepard and all about running and go go go. Well, it came down to either stay where we were and leave my oldest in danger and turmoil, but keep both dogs, or do what my oldest needed to be safe and happy and have to give up our little pup. Well, for us, it was heartbreaking, but not even something we had to discuss. We talked to everyone we knew first, to see if anyone could keep her (the pup) at least til we were able to buy a house or find somewhere we could have her, or even to adopt her, but noone could, we tried friends, same thing. So we put out a networking system and someone a good friend knew said he would be thrilled to take her. We met him first, then decided to do a trial weekend. (we did this with another friend who wanted her badly, but it just didnt work out and we were glad tofind out rather soon enough to find her a new home that would) - Well, he lived out on a huge farm, and had a teen daughter, and they both fell so much in love with her. We made she she had all the shots she needed, he kept up w/her current vet, sent her w/her toys/dishes/blankets/etc. and kpt up w/phone calls to make sure all was well. Now keep in mind too, this was a puppy we had to buy on a payment plan too, 800.00 we paid for her, she was well worth it, such a beautiful, friendly, smart, loving little dog. We gave her away for free. Because it ment much more to us that she go to a good home where she would be happy and loved than any $$ she could have brought us. Heaven knows an ad in the paper would have sold her in a heartbeat. But that just wnst right to us. End story, our pup is happier then ever, riding around w/his teen daugher and helping round up cows, spoiled rotten and has the run of the house/land. Way better than having her kept in a tiny yard, only waiting each day for a walk to look forward to. We loved her, and it was heartbreaking to have to give her up but yeah, we love our kids more. Ive got to say Im with Freedom here. I love my pets, they are spoiled and happy and have all they need/want and more, but they are our Pets. and when it comes down between my kids and my pets, its no discussion for us.
So, lets see, my suggestion for anyone who is moving, the onlyway I found somewhere to take our furry/feathered ones as well, was by calling around to all the property management companies and putting the word out, what we needed and that we were willing to pay the extra pet deposit. (fyi, standard that ive found is 100.00per pet (under 50lbs) , with a limit on how many, and size. From what Ive heard, it goes up about 100.00 each 50lbs after the original 50.lbs. -fyi same issues apply if you have a large fishtank. Many places we talked to only will let you have a tank if its 30gallon or less. couple places said no way just on our 55gallon!
good luck.
Tiffany

tiffela74- You have children and yes they should be your priority so you'll get no flack from me on that. I/we elected not to have kids and therefore can and do put our critters first. In fact, I'll put my critters over visitors. If they can't handle friendly dogs, then they need not visit, but that's getting off subject so I'll stop there

So what is the rest of the story?

From your logic it should be easy to find rentals for people with certain pets, its not. The odd thing is most landlords have pets. Could it be human behaviour that is amiss?

Reality alert, if everyone in the world quit eating animals there would be no PEOPLE. I would quote a scripture from The One that made the animals but somehow I think you would trample that. Prove me wrong
P.S. I raise meat for some of the reasons you stated. Don't attach someone elses bad deeds to every meat eater. I am also aware of what people do to people, this bothers me even more. Did you know some even eat people. Now that a cause to get behind -PETP.
