Moving to Hawthorne - mistake? Please help!
Hi all,
I'm a Seattle native moving down to Portland on short notice for a job. I went apartment-hunting this weekend and put down a small deposit on a nice second-floor apartment two blocks south of the Bagdad Theater (SE 37th and Market)...and then, somehow, I completely overlooked the presence of the Hawthorne Theater all-ages club nearby.
I'm panicked. I'm a light sleeper and really don't do well with bass. Given my job, I'll be going to bed around 11pm at night. Is this a total mistake, or are noise regulations and insulation going to save me? The windows to my place look solid, but maybe I'm mistaken. I have a day or two to change my mind, and I would be super-grateful for anyone's advice or experience. Thanks so much!

That part of Hawthorne usually has a lot of people around pretty late at night. And I doubt that noise regulations are enforced.... we just don't have enough police for that.
If you look else where, consider Westmoreland/ Sellwood and Brooklyn. Those areas are close in SE (a bit further South than Hawt.). Tend to be quieter... but just depends on the actual street.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply -- it is much appreciated! I also have a lead on a quieter 1-bedroom on the north side of Hawthorne, around SE Taylor and SE 27th -- a bit further away, so maybe not so bad...? It's a 10-unit complex surrounded by very little besides homes and condos. Finally, there's a small studio on NW 25th and Pettygrove (sp?). I'm leaning towards that, since it's month-to-month and would let me explore the city a bit before I settle; I've also heard Nob Hill is trendy but not clubby. I would love to move to Sellwyn, but since I work in the north end of the city, it might not be very practical. Moving is a lot easier when you know the city already!

Thanks, all. I decided to stick with it for now, since it's month-to-month and there's no easy way for me to find another place by the time I start on the 18th! I will update you once I move in, assuming I can figure out a place to park my UHaul (eek). It looks like I can reserve curbside room to unload, but I don't know if I can pick up the permit from the city -- and post it -- before I move down on the 12th. Should be interesting...for now, I'm crossing my fingers that the noise won't be so bad, since I am a little ways away, and since the building has new, insulated windows. Here's hoping this is the only move I have to make for awhile! Update coming soon...

Just curious... where did you find the rental info? I've been looking in Craig's list, Wweek's and the Oregonian classifieds. Wondering if there are any other's that are good resources... THANKS!

I wouldn't worry about the Hawthorne Theater noise. I think you're probably far enough away from it at 37th and Market. Good luck.
