Talking Possible move from Ontario, Canada to Portland

My husband is considering a transfer to Portland from Ontario, Canada and I'm in need of some assistance in determining which parts of Portland would be nice to live in. Right now we live in a large suburban area of 400,000 about 30 mins from downtown (Toronto). We have a large condo, but would also consider going back to a single family home. We like having close access to shops, coffee houses, movies, etc...as well as quick access to rural areas for hiking, bike riding, etc. We don't have children so schools or family-oriented neighborhoods are not a priority for us. Are there any areas of Portland that anyone can recommend?

Also if anyone has suggestions for good websites for newcomers, we'd really appreciate it.

And about the weather - it's all perspective, isn't it?? A few months back we were contemplating a move to Phoenix, and the Arizona forum had lots of people complaining about the heat. With Portland, we figure there is lots of rain and fog and dreary days. But coming from Canada where we're lucky if we get 3-4 nice warm summer months, we'll gladly try a new place without as much snow and cold

You will love it here! We get about 4-5 months of good weather (May-Oct) and you wont have to worry about snow. But you might have to deal with the ice every once in awhile. NE Portland or SW Portland would be a good fit.
Have a good one!

Brandon

You might like the east suburbs better if you like hiking.

I prefer the ocean - like going every weekend - so I'm going back to a west suburb once we sell and get back up there.

There are many trails in the Columbia River gorge and toward Mt. Hood - that's east of Portland.

Most of what you listed, are available in many suburbs. I'd rather ride a bicycle in Beaverton than Portland.

My mother is from Ontario. Small place once called Keewatin, now within what's called Kenora. I went there 3 summers in a row for a month, spending most of my time down at the lake.

If you like hiking, you are going to love it here.

This year, I started a hiking page on my website. I'm starting to take video clips of each hike. For now, I've only got video of a few southern Oregon hiking trails since we're here for the moment. I'll have to wait until we move to get video of my all-time favorites which are up north. I only have photos of the north trails right now.

The redwoods of northern California near Brookings, Oregon, are contenders with the northern Oregon trails for my all-time favorite hiking.
