I ask because Id like to know if you can get work in Portland for massage therapy whether its working for someone.. or by yourself doing house calls.
I am in massage school now and graduate in 7 months and when I do, I am eligible to start practicing.
I personally would think you could make lots if you go to areas like the west hills with the richer and the older. So if anyone is in this career here, give me feedback. Thanks.

For what it is worth....

Portland has lots of underemployed massage therapist. Not enough business to go around.

It's the Great Recession, people are not as free with their money.

Have you asked the same question in the Las Vegas forum? I was just there and the gal in the poker room was making a killing. $20 for ten minutes and she was staying busy. I don't know if that is normal or the fact that she was good looking with the body of a stripper.

There has been a congestion of LMTs for several years, and competition gets fierce. Some work in chiropractor's offices, others have their own lots, and there are others that do housecalls. Here, because of the competition, it's difficult to open up shop without a customer base established. Are you training for several types of massage? To be able to offer a choice in your marketing will help.

The above poster's comment about the therapist in the poker room reminded me of the time I was in a shopping mall in California, and there was a group of Asian LMTs in the middle offering accupressure massages. I decided to treat myself to one, and the aggressive massage felt sooo good. Don't know how well that would work at one of Portland's malls ~ probably VERY well during the holidays!

Well I might be ok then.. I dont plan on starting a business here YET. Id most likely do housecalls in Portland and establish a base that way which it seems like you can do there. I just gotta pay off all my debts and Im square and can go there in like 15 months time maybe.
Im training for different types yes. Swedish, Shiatsu, some others maybe hot stone. I had the real aggressive massage on me (from students), I dont care too great for it. I like medium pressure.
