Hey, I am planning on attending Portland State and was wondering if any of you knew of any good commuter bikes as well as good bike routes around the city?

Looking forward to attending school in Portland, love the city!

Hi there,

'good bike routes around the city' is a bit general a question to answer well, but you can start by getting a bike route map. The city of Portland website has info here: Portland Citywide & Neighborhood Bike Maps

Also, it's a little difficult to say what would be a good commuter for your specific circumstances. I ride an older bike that I converted to single speed. I haven't had a problem with hills here so far, but if you want to ride in forest park or long distances you might want to look at cyclocross or touring bikes. Mainly you just want to find something sturdy and unless you have someplace to keep it inside or locked (heavily locked), something older that won't be irreplaceable if it gets stolen. Bike theft is pretty common in Portland.

Sellwood cycles has a good selection of new and used bikes and an online inventory that they update regularly. Sellwood Cycle Repair

Probably something not too nice. I see people with nice bikes bringing theirs into their office, so I suspect bicycle theft is rampant. You only get that kind of privilege if you're a staff, GTA or the like I would assume.

Whatever you ride just keep up maintenance around here. Rust can be an issue depending on how often you ride in the rain or if you store the bike outside. I learned quick after moving from flat land Chicago that my bike was due for a tuneup when my I went down my first hill in the rain and my brakes were loose. That was crazy.
