I won’t be holding my breath expecting a self-righteous, “I don’t have to move over if I don't want to” Oregon driver to suddenly become a safe and courteous one after crossing the California border.
"SAFE AND COURTEOUS" in California? You're joking, right?

I grew up in Oregon and current live in the Bay area. I certainly DO drive about 80 mph on the freeway here and 40 in town. That's how they do it in California so that's how I'm doing it here EXCEPT:
*I refuse to cut people off in traffic
*I can't get myself to speed up through yellow lights (if I miss it, I miss it - oh well)
*when people use their turn signal, I let them in (that actually causes some problems sometimes because they aren't expecting it)
*I let people who are leaving their driveway enter the flow of traffic
*when there's a merge coming up, I slow down to allow someone to get in front of me instead of speeding up so I can be first.

I guess some habits die hard.

BUT: when my husband (who learned to drive in Hawaii but has lived in California since the mid 80's) and I come to Oregon to visit I always remind him before we get to the border:

*drive the speed limit
*use your turn signals
*'merge' means we all take turns
*when someone turns on their turn signal, you're supposed to let them into your lane by SLOWING down so they can get in.
*oh, and you don't have to tip the gas station attendant every single time

He's so good now, as soon as we cross the border he slows down and waves people into traffic and everything. We can't wait to move.

No, I’m not joking. I’ve read enough of your posts to understand you dislike all things Californian, but I’ve lived all over California and I’ve never had a problem with their drivers. Have you ever driven on the east coast? Unlike there, in California no one uses their horn unless they have to and people generally take their turn at 4 way stops.

Btw, while it’s not illegal to be discourteous to the faster traffic behind you, hogging the left lane is never a good idea. I wrote to the Oregon State Police to get their opinion on this subject and Sgt. Worthy agrees with those of us who recommend moving over for faster traffic;

Hello,

I have a question about the signs on our highways that state; Slower
Traffic Keep Right. Can you tell me what the Oregon Highway Patrol's
official policy is?

When I'm driving in the left lane and someone comes up behind me I always
move to the right, no matter what speed I’m driving. I understand that
the signs are advisory in nature and drivers are not required to move to
the right, but do you recommend someone do so, even when they're in the
left lane and driving at the speed limit?

I believe they should, but I would appreciate any info you could shed on
the subject, thanks!

Tom
We recommend that drivers yield the lane to faster traffic regardless of the speed limit.
You are right in everything that you said above.

Sgt. Worthy

As stated just a few posts ago, it IS ILLEGAL. There is a law written in to the Oregon Vehicle Code to address it. I even copied the section of the code. I don't understand why no one wants to acknowledge that.

Try going to the county and getting a building permit and see how long the process takes. Every week I drive by some place that has gone out of business. Seems only ones hiring is in more government which means higher and more taxes. NO THANKS! No More I'm done. My wife is a lot younger then I am and still needs to work. Besides it is my understanding that Boise is way more family friendly and they still make eye contact with you. Check out the cost of housing. if anyone wants to know the difference in cost of living in different areas bestplacesdotnet It is a good place to start.

Idaho is what Oregon was 30 years ago. A beautiful live and let live State with few problems of the big city. The Portland area is unrecognizable to me from when I first moved here. I get flipped off at least once a week and that is more than norm than not.
Amen Brother! I too am leaving for Idaho after 22 years. WAY to much socialism here.

Seriously though... Good luck in Idaho. You'll be safe from us commies there, for certain.
Here is a perfect example why some of us are leaving. I hope to sell all 5 of my rentals over the next couple years and re-invest in Idaho.

Plus, frankly, the potatoes are a whole lot better.

...craving a good old Idaho Russet, grown in the volcanic rich soil of Bingham county...also miss seeing the Tetons from my backyard.

Oh Boy!
Looks like Idaho is in the same boat Oregon was in ten years ago.

Yay Idaho!

But,...............I've been thinking..................
You know,,,,,,, I've always thought parts of Idaho were pretty appealing.
I have often pondered moving there.
It suits my old Oregon sensiblities to a tee, and seems to be become more and more attractive everyday I think about it.
With much less rain too!
Somewhat isolated though. But every inch of Idaho is paradise!
I guess things have changed and Idaho is going to be the place to move to in the next few years.
It's really starting to get a "fairy tale" reputation.
And I've never really heard anything bad about Idaho!
Awesome living, unparalleled outdoor activities, uncrowded.............not to mention all those cute, hungry, blond Idaho country girls!!!
Potatoes aren't the only good thing in Idaho, believe me! And, Idaho is business freindly to boot! IT"S PErFECT!
Yeah, I am definately going to look into it!

Good Luck Idaho! (maybe Oregon will get some relief!)

If it weren't for the harsh winters and unrelenting wind, I might think about moving back there too. (Oops, have I ruined the fairy-tale image for anyone?).

Since I've already sort of highjacked the thread, I'll add one more thing - if anyone is traveling through SE ID on the way to somewhere more interesting, stop in a little town called Blackfoot, between Idaho Falls and Pocatello. They have "The World's Potato Expo," and offer "free taters for out-of-staters." Highjack over.

Things always go way the heck off course if a thread gets beyond ten or twelve posts.

The OP's question shouldn't necessarily give free rein to trash an entire state or city, no matter what a person's feelings are. What would you expect people to say? Especially calling Oregon a "waist of a state." Even if they were being silly & trollish, it's a pretty goofy post. That OP should know that Fairview ain't Portland. Two completely different animals.

I, too, think he/she should not leave Portland mad or upset - they should simply go away. No need to have bad vibes. Just go. That'll make them happy, I'm sure.
If a person feels that Oregon is a waste of space, they have a right to express their opinion.
