June 7, still no sun
I know, complaining about the weather is for babies...but come on. This is my third summer here and I am absolutely at my limit. FOR THE LOVE OF HUMANITY, LET THE SUN SHINE. Soon.
We've had a few sporadic days of balmy sunshine in the past few weeks, but nothing showing us that summer is actually right around the corner. Last week I looked outside and saw BRIGHT SUNSHINE. I ran outside to the park across the street; it immediately became cloudy and started misting. I was crushed. In Portland, April showers bring May...showers bring June...showers. It's been misting for several days now, with a perpetual overhang of gray clouds.
Sure it's getting "warmer". I think it reached all of 58 degrees today. When I think of June, I think of blue skies, playing outside, picnics, and lazy days out in the hammock. Instead, on June 7, I'm burrowing in my apartment wearing three shirts, a cap, and woolen socks. I went on a bike ride yesterday afternoon and got caught in a massive rainstorm. As always, there was a bar nearby beckoning me with dry shelter and fine Oregon beer. It's a trap.
See ya, Portland. As of June 30, I'm outta here. Hopefully the next transplants will fare better than I have.

What are you talking about? Prior to Monday it was 80-90 degrees for days and days and May was beautiful...Guess what--this isn't Arizona--it's not SUPPOSED to be 90 here every day!
90 is not "balmy"--it's plain old hot. Give me 70 degree days anyday!!!

Out of curiousity, why would someone wear three shirts, a hat and wool socks when it's 60 degrees out? Perhaps you should move to the desert if you're that cold?!

90 degrees is gross and uncomfortable in any setting. It's already reaching 90 here in FL and this will last...well, for a LONG time. I'll take Portland's 60-70 degrees and or/overcast over perpetual heat and intense sun any day.
But I do understand gnubler's frustration. We're just annoyed by opposite conditions.

What gets me is the exaggerations. June 7th and still no sun? We've had lots of wonderful sunny weather over the last few months/weeks. May had lots of gorgeous days, as did April, March, Feb. etc. But because it isn't sunny every day of the month people moan on and on about how it's grey 9 months of the year and while it may rain/mist or be cloudy some of the time, it's such an exaggeration. Nov-Jan is pretty wet, and bleak definitely, though there are still some beautiful days during that period. But 9 months of grey is just exaggeration. Besides our summer is July through September, just like San Francisco tends to have some of the most gorgeous weather Aug-Oct. Just depends on the place and if you need it hot May through September live in the south or the desert!!!

gnubler, have you considered that you may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder? That may explain why you are profoundly affected by the lack of sunshine.
Personally, I think the clouds and rain are a small price to pay for greenery, clean air, and fresh water all summer. In June 2005 I flew into Ontario, CA and was greeted with smog, 105-degree temperatures and BROWNERY. I thought it was very depressing, so I guess I can understand the problem.

Hi,
I'm in California and we have excellent weather "year round" NO RAIN, NO SNOW,NO HUMIDITY,NO OVERCAST SKIES...65 degrees average with the high around 85. It's a wonderful state to live in IF it didn't cost you your last drop of blood. Yes, VERY EXPENSIVE- (mainly housing/apartments) everything else is "affordable."
I'm considering relocating to Portland for its "liberal atmosphere" and natural beauty. Gnubler- Made some really good points. The rain can be depressing for many people and that will get you down. I'm quite the opposite, I feel depressed when there's sunshine, yes, as strange as that may seems I'm not in to 365 days a year of sunshine. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "rain fanatic" either. I like "overcast skies" with slight drizzle or no drizzle. Now that I can handle all year round. Gnubler- please don't move just for the weather. I hear that Portland is such a wonderful city. Am I wrong?
