Maybe so. I return every couple years. My wife is not as rootless as I am. Or we'd have moved there a long time ago. As it is, I have a house in Minnesota that's nearly paid off. A nd I'll probably be making trips west very often. My father and mother both retired in Oregon.

I guess I was thinking of the people who complain about the endless gray days and constant rain. It's not that they don't exist, but there are probably less than 30 days a year that are like that. If you are outside, there are many breaks in the clouds all day long. Very typically it will be raining in the morning, break off about 10 AM as the atmosphere warms, and it will be partly cloudy from noon to about 4. After 4 it's sunset, so it looks pretty gray again. When storm fronts come through it gets pretty wet, but right behind the storm front is partly cloudy, though colder, weather. It takes a day or two for the storm to blow through, and then you have a week to 10 days of partly cloudy weather with plenty of sun. And then there's the "February break," when we get about 10 days to 2 weeks of perfectly clear, dry weather.

I worked outside in it for 25 years. Most days in the winter you don't need rain gear, even if you are outside all day long. Yes, the coast is wetter, but not the Willamette valley.

I think the thing that distorts people's perceptions is their lifestyle. Working 8 to 5 cuts you off from nature.

I guess you can come here and escape from some of those Minnesota winters!
But I understand if you have an almost paid-off house, why you would stay.

As I said, my wife will never move. Her feet are cast in concrete. Now that never slowed down my father. But I'm not he. In fact, he gained a habit of leaving all of us from jobs that took him all over the country. So his last leaving was really just a rut he was in from working. I was flighty like hat a long time back, but the rut got filled in a long time back. But I'll never forget all the nice things about the PNW. Probably one of the two or three nicest regions in the nation.

Beenhere4ever, there's something about prairie lovers - they are deeply rooted in their homes (from what I've found). At least you can continue to come visit the PNW and enjoy. And who knows, maybe one day your wife will get sick of digging the car out of the snow!

Couldn't get two more different weather situations. Depends on what you're looking for.

We don't dig our cars out of snow. That was the point of the 2 car garage. In fact, she's had nothing to do with snow for many years (don't ask how that can be, it should be obvious). Another problem is...............I don't hate winter! I hate summer! Life's too complicated. But loving PNW is simple. Even when it is gray, it is marvelous!

If you don't hate winter, then I hear Minnesota is a very nice state to live in.
