Guess what, you were told wrong. Portland has tons of great restaurants. Not up there yet with San Francisco, but still, tons of great places. I imagine TX will look boring by comparison.
I don't frequent the malls much but Portland Parks and Rec has indoor parks all over the city in the winter.

OK where's Genoa? Try diNapoli's on Powell Blvd across from the Parry center. Italian to die for! Also the Iron Horse out south for great Mexican. I drive 80 miles to eat there with my girls at least one weekend a month!

Genoa Restaurant
2832 SE Belmont St.
Portland, OR 97214
You will need reservations and a big budget. It is a multiple course menu. It is my favorite restaurant in the world (and I lived for many years in SF)

I meant to mention this when this thread was first posted, but if anyone is interested in a place that is really cozy, popular with regulars and has good, good food (and wines, drinks too) but a little on the pricey side, check out the Leaky Roof in Goose Hollow. It's been there forever and ever and the food is excellent. They have organic meats as well. It's a hole in the wall size wise but well worth a visit. Their menu is online (since I can't post a link on here).

You're kidding, right? There are hundreds of great restaurants in Portland, this town is famous for it's food. And some of the malls do have play areas. Also, Lloyds Center has an indoor ice skating rink that's very popular with everyone, especially kids. Have fun!
