We've been looking at all the areas that all you helpful people have mentioned. Believe it or not I have been able to talk hubby into thinking about being a little closer in. We have found a couple of places in Scappoose, Bethany, Cedar Mills and Hillsboro.

When he was down there for the interview he mentioned that the area north of Swan Island seem really dense and industrial. I think he didn't look that far from the port area.

What can you all tell me about the Milwaukie and Tualatin areas?

Thank you all for all your help.

Milwaukie is an older industrial/suburban town just south of Portland on the east side of the river. The headquarters of Dark Horse Comics is there, and a new MAX light rail line between Milwaukie and downtown Portland is in the planning stage.

Tualatin is a mostly-new suburb just off I-5 between Tigard and Wilsonville, on the west side of the river. It's further from Swan Island than Milwaukie as the crow flies, but proximity to I-5 might make up for that. The most recent big new shopping center in the Portland area is in a former quarry in Tualatin.

If you want Bob's Red Mill products, you can get them at the Whole Foods store in Tualatin, or at the mill itself in Milwaukie. That epitomizes the difference between the towns in my mind.

When you find suitable housing closer to his workplace you will be saving both time and money.

Rent a house on Sauvie Island. Craigslist usually has a few. You can sometimes get a floating house if you don't get seasick. It's closer than Scappoose.

Check out Banks or North Plains on the west side, or maybe Sunnyside on the east side of town. Personally I always liked North Plains and it's really not even that far at all from the city center. Banks isn't bad either. Forest Grove is little bit far out there, as is Scappoose.

Vancouver...not sure why anybody would by choice. It's kind of the equivalent of New Jersey
