Default Visiting Portland for New Year's

Hi all -

My partner and I will be visiting Portland for New Year's this year. Any ideas on where to stay and what to do around that time? I understand that time of the year isn't the best time to visit as far as the weather is concerned, but we don't mind the rain one bit. We're considering moving either there or Seattle in 2009, and we just want to get a feel for the city and surrounding areas. Thanks!

C'mon, guys. I know you're not shy. Anyone have any suggestions as far as hotels, must see places, etc.?

The only times I've been in Portland have been July but there is so much to do in the city of Portland alone!
We also make sure to visit the wine country (though in Jan nothing will be going on), the coast and the Columbia Gorge which is breathtaking.
I am certain there will be some big parties going on for New Year's as well...I am sure you will love it no matter what!!

Right now I'm just looking for ideas for hotels, which are there all year long... I'm also curious about events that are static to the area for that time of year. I understand NYE events change, so I'll ask about those again as time gets closer.

Default where to stay in Portland

I would highly suggest staying at The Embassy Suites downtown Portland... The hotel is BEAUTIFUL and reasonable. They offer FREE cocktails in the evening (its called Managers Reception), and FREE made to order breakfast in the morning. Staff is also nice...my sister works there!!
