I have to teach somebody how to drive a stick-shift car - he bought it and it's just sitting because he's not confident enough to drive it. So, I've volunteered my expertise.

Can anyone suggest a large, empty parking lot in which to do this? Maybe a shopping mall on a Sunday AM before the stores open? Is there a vacant big box store with a large lot? We're in the North Portland area, so the closer the better.

I can remember back when I learned - NOBODY I knew could drive a stick-shift, so I had to teach myself. Wow, that was an awful two weeks when I stalled constantly, burned rubber, and made a lot of people behind me really pissed off when I couldn't get the car going. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it.

Just check the local parks, retail outlets, grocery stores, schools etc...
You may need to get there "early" in the morning to conduct your lessons.

I learned to drive stick in a church parking lot on off-hours. Weekday afternoons, Saturday afternoons, etc. Lots of nice parking spaces all in a row, no one to see you stall, and guaranteed pretty empty (unless it's a Sunday service or Saturday wedding.)

I taught my husband how to drive a stick shift in one of the parking lots by GI Joe's in Delta Park. I think they've redeveloped that area now, but I imagine it would be fine in the morning before they open.

If he bought a Subaru keep in mind it probably has a hill-holder clutch which will make things much much easier when teaching him to accelerate from a stop on a hill.

Instead of a retail parking lot, how about a company lot? Something like the Freightliner corporate offices (not the plant) on Swan Island. That parking lot is close to deserted during the weekends and pretty huge. If you want directions to it, PM me and I'll give them to you.

Get out to Delta Park, the raceway driveway or the Expo center on "off hours".
