Does Portland have the following: Opera, Symphony, Playhouse, etc? How about classes for the community such as poetry, literature, etc?

Portland has the most utilized library system in the country (surpassing the use of New York City), more readers than anywhere in the country, the biggest summer reading program in the country, the largest bookstore and so on. There are tons of things here. Yes, opera, symphony, theatre, ballet, art museum, etc.

Absolutely! Some of my fondest memories as a kid were keeping my grandpa awake at the Portland Philharmonic. James De Priest became my personal hero. Portland has one of the most varied and hottest music scenes in the US, right now.

You'll find that Portland is one of the more interesting cities, culturally speaking. Lots to do and see. To get a feel for the area, check out the local indie newspaper Willamette Week. (Google it...the last time I put that link in a post I got a "warning" for advertising. ) Some of the best info in town on what's going on. Everything from weird indie shows to opera, symphony, small theatre company products, etc.

Very cool stuff in this city for just about any palate.

Yes, there is alot to do in Portland in that way. I took classes also at PSU and PCC and enjoyed them. There are alot of classes also in the community on various interests, gardening, cooking, new age, etc. I really enjoyed the libraries and bookstores there too. Alot of the little clubs there (Hawthorn District) will have poetry readings and small music groups, very nice. Enjoyed the Portland Ballet, Nutcracker is put on every year, great! I miss the culture, just not the rain there!
