Hi, I’m 20 yrs old and just found out I’m pregnant. I’m 4 wks and 4 days and I’m having cramping. I wouldn’t say it’s really bad but it is uncomfortable. Sort of like PMS cramps. I’m really scared because I had a missed miscarriage 3 yrs ago and I really want this pregnancy to work. Is this normal or should I go to the ER?

PS I am very very scared

It is normal to have period-like cramps in the first 6-8 weeks of pregnancy. My doctor says it's a sometimes a side effect of the fertilised egg burrowing deeper into the lining of the womb, and thus a good thing. But if there is blood, it is best to get checked out (though some spotting is also normal).

Try not to worry (easy for me to say, I know). Like the PP stated, cramping is normal during the early weeks as the egg implants. You may have some spotting as well. Your best bet is to just take it easy and try to relax. Since you are so early in your pregnancy they would likely just send you home from the ER and tell you to wait it out anyway.

There's nothing you can do about it either way... so know that can be a variation of normal events, relax, and try to take care of yourself as much as possible. Stress definitely makes it worse. Also don't take any caffeine or some types of herbal teas.

I have an acquaintance that just went through this. Her ob told her to drink lots of water, and just take it easy. If you are worried, call your ob!

I too experienced a lot of cramping early in my pregnancy. It wasn't really painful, just felt weird and I didn't bleed. It was just a normal thing for me as my uterus started growing. But a call to your doctor is never a bad idea if you're stressed.

Cramping is normal in "normal" pregnancies AND "abnormal" ones so it really can't be used to tell you anything I guess. .

I also heard drinking water and lying on your left side helps. . .

I had cramping. I thought I was just going to start my period soon so I didn't think much about it. But a friend of mine encouraged me to get a pregnancy test anyway. My periods were never regular so I couldn't really tell if I was late and also the big reason I didn't think much about it is, my husband and I were told we couldn't have kids. I took the pregnancy test and it came back positive. My OB said the cramping is normal due to the uterus. If bleeding occurs then there is a problem. But the best advice I can give is discuss the cramping with your doctor.
