Only if on the due date you are miles away from medical care. Babies seem to "know" when the most inopportune time is to come...they come when they want to...
My first born went two weeks late, no signs of labor, dr. finally induced me. Thank goodness they did as the placenta had begun to shut down and the baby had already taken a Poo in the fluid.
I was my mother's first (she was 20) and I was a week late. One more day and the doctor was going to induce. Labor was about 23 hours total. Funny thing was that the original due date was my Dad's birthday so he jokes every year that I stood him up on his birthday.
My grandson arrived exactly ON his due date, but the labor was induced (due to my daughter 's blood pressure starting to spike very high a week before). He was an ounce short of 10 pounds, and my daughter is a teeny tiny little thing (barely five feet tall). She had a horrible time pushing him out, and a lot of pain, despite an epidural. I shudder to think how big he would have been if he were late like other first babies.
What is considered early anyways. I have heard that 37 -40 weeks is considered full time? Is that true?
Also, for those of you who have given birth early, how was that. Did it take you by surprise or were you expecting it. Also, where were you at at the time. Im worried sometimes I will be on the subway or somewhere in public and all of a sudden here it comes.!!

Full term is now considered 39-40 wks (from the last period). 37-38 wks is considered "early term", 41 wks late term, and over 42 wks post term. My first was born early, by 2 wks. Yes, I was surprised. I had just started my maternity leave. I was planning on spending those last 2 wk getting the room ready, resting, etc. I was at home when labor started.
Wow, I would be thinking "please don't do this to me" ...Im so worried that my husband wont be home and I have to take myself to the hospital.
