I hope she won't get offended when people confuse her as the grandmother when she is 70 at this kid's graduation.

I would guess that chance of it being IVF are a lot less than that. Menopause happens in the late 50s so as long as the woman is ovulating, she can become pregnant.

I would say "Congratulations" and do whatever the friendship calls for (ie. a shower, gift, card, depending on the nature of the relationship).

With that said, I probably didn't handle my real life situation with that too well. My parents called me home from college one weekend to tell me they were having another baby. They weren't in their 50s but mid 40s. I adore my much younger siblings (I have two) but I don't know anybody that wants to think about their parents having sex regardless of how old we are.

I wish them well for an easy pregnancy, a smooth delivery, and the energy and stamina to raise a child into their "golden years." As someone who had her last baby at the age of 41, I don't necessarily recommend it - not so much the pregnancy and labor and delivery, but getting that last child raised to adulthood (I'm tired).
That is not necessarily a bad thing. I became a father in my mid 50s and worked very hard to be a good active parent. It helped keep me young.
