I have a good friend who did this. She would have alot of pro and con's to add...
But basically after all was said and done, I think she'd boil it down to this...
It is a gift, not a business transaction. However much is paid, will seem insignificant (to the carrying mother/ would seem very significant to bio parent) if that is what is expected from the experience.
Someone close to me is about to do this. It's for her Dh's cousin's wife. They are close, she told it was God's way of using her to bless the other family. Like the pp said, it's a gift.
My friend is currently surrogating (?) for the 3rd time. She doesn't have her own kids and has no desire to ever be a mother, but she loves being pregnant.
I think when I'm done having my own kids I'd love to surrogate.
No, but I know of two women who have been surrogates two times each (both carried twins each time.) I think the key to being a succesful surrogate is having your head (and heart) in the right place. You have to have the mindset that these babies are not yours, and that you are solely the vessel in which these babies are being carried. I would also think you need to be very strong emotionally.
After going through years of infertilty myself (and eventually getting pregnant via IVF, and subsequently adopting) I would love to be a surrogate mother. But I am in my early 40's now, and am not sure if I am the perfect candidate. If I was 10 years younger, I would do it in a heartbeat.
I'm looking into the surrogate mother option. It seems like a loving way to help bring a child into a good compassionate envirment.
