Default Do Twins Or Other Multiple Births Run In Your Family?

Is there a history of twins or more in your family?

On my husband's side, there were 2 sets of twins (1 set from his grandmother and another set from his own mother. Both sets died at birth).

I have 1 set (that I know of) in my family. My fraternal twin niece and nephew.

You're loaded up genetically with crazy eggs that could do anything!

No twins in my family---neither of my parents' families and neither of my husband's parents' families.

When it comes to pregnancy, the only side of the family that matters is the wife's side so I'm not sure why I even shared about my husband's side of the family.

My brothers are fraternal twins. My mom's first cousin has fraternal twin boys. My grandmother's sister had two sets of boy-girl twins, and one of those girls grew up to have fraternal twins. None of these multiple births were fertility drug-induced. Releasing multiple eggs at a time (which, if two are fertilized at the same time, result in fraternal twins, unlike identical twins, which result from a single fertilized egg that splits) is definitely a genetic predisposition in my gene pool.

Fraternal twins are the only kind of twins that are genetically predisposed in families, identical twins are more of a freak of nature so anyone can have identical twins. To have fraternal twins you need to have a gene passed down through your female linage (mother, her mother, etc.). Although we know of no other fraternal twins in our family history, we have fraternal twins. Also, having one set of fraternal twins gives you a 1 in 4 chance of having another set--which is why we stopped having kids .

I was told my whole life that I could have twins because of my mom and it "skips a generation." But then I heard a while back that, because identical twins happen spontaneously, there is no genetic predisposition, and that fraternal twins (the propensity to release more than 1 egg) is what runs in families. Either way, no twins for me and my only sister had to use fertility treatments to get just 1 baby.
