as nature abhors a vacuum , so too shall Prescott . when the families leave and houses sit empty then the prices of them shall fall . then people shall see that and move in .
Prescott does not have a monopoly on families moving out . it is happening all over America . even in other countries around the world .
so, to sum it up . why worry ? sing and dance as the world will go on . not a damn thing you/i/we can do about it .

Well, if it's any consolation, we are a young family thinking about moving to Prescott Valley! We literally just got back from a trip there, where we spent 3 days (which I know isn't much). We currently live in a suburb of New Orleans, so crooked politics, lack of funding for schools, and white trash are nothing new to us (although we do live in a rare enclave of very good public schools). But add to all those problems a miserable climate, mosquitoes, sky-high homeowners insurance, hurricanes, and being 6 hours from a major metropolis like Houston, and you can see why, to us, Prescott seems like heaven. My husband is a pharmacist, so he would make the same 6-figure salary there that he does here, and according to city-data, the cost of living and average housing prices are about the same there as here. The main thing we like about the area is the proximity to outdoor activities that we have no access to here (mountains, hiking, skiing, National Parks, golf resorts, whitewater rafting, hockey, etc).
The only thing we didn't like was the numerous vagrants, which I've learned from previous threads are likely a result of all the halfway houses. We have homeless people in New Orleans, of course, but you never see any in the 'burbs. We were shocked to see them hanging outside CVS in PV.
Feel free to talk me out of this if you think we're crazy!

Prescott & PV is a hot spot for vagrants, that is for sure. The problem is they hang out in the parks and on the hiking trails, so they ruin ones outdoor activities also.

If you can afford to live here, move in, it is a lot better than New Orleans. The weather is a lot nicer and the crime is lower.

Just pointing these places out because if someone is retiring to or thinking about raising a family in Prescott, these are some of the city's closest neighbors.
As a retiree, I am unable to see any negative influence by the moribund Frontier Mall. I am a regular customer at Home Depot and Zekes with no negatives.

I feel safer in their lot at night than at Albertson's/Staples lot, for example. Lots of car breakins there. They like to check the glove box, console and under the driver's seat.

Speaking of the Frontier Mall, Zeke's in PV is closing and Zeke's in the Frontier Mall will extend their hours to include dinner.

BTW, they finally banned smoking a coupla months back, probably in anticipation of the closing of their PV restaurant, so those who didn't find the non-smoking section smokeless enough, this is good news.

As a giant Zeke's fan, this should bring more folks to the Frontier Mall.

I think every single one of you would be miserable living anywhere. You are all just a big group of complainers! Prescott is a wonderful place to live. I think there is a tremendous amount of things to do for families. But, you have to get off the couch and actually go! I have met the most kind and wonderful people here. Clearly, I haven't met any of you and I hope I never will. If you hate it so much shut-up already and leave. Change your life if you hate it. It's not our job to make you happy it's yours!

I don't think just one poster was being referred to. That said, please don't just start sniping back and forth at one another. There's disagreements about quality of life in Prescott, just like in just about every city discussed in the City-Data forums.

You are all free to disagree here, but not to be disagreeable.

Not me. We have never regretted out decision to retire here. As in any location, there is a balance of positives and negatives. Presott, is no different.

We talk about the negatives because we would like to see improvement.

I don't think too many folks talk about the positives as much, because everything is fine. Not much discussion needed to say how we like the weather, the scenery, etc.

Does anyone really care how much I love to wake to the songbirds?

i had to take my dog to a vet in CV . as i was driving down Highway 89 and neared Paulden and i could see for a long way off to the West . all i could see was housing stretched to the horizon . then i thought back to 1993 when i drove the same road and there were only few houses hugging the highway . made me think of just where did all those people come from . finally dawned on me that they most likely moved out from Prescott for one reason or another .
