Sorry to hear that. I've got a friend looking for work in telecommunications, and he's running into the same thing (both locally and elsewhere). You would think they could at least send out some sort of form letter to the applicants.

What you experienced is typical of Prescott businesses. In my line of work, I have seen that Sedona and Prescott have the same employee-employer mentality.
Let me explain. Both towns believe and behave as if the person applying is privileged to apply to work in their town. As they surely cannot afford to live in their town, so they are "outsiders". In Sedona, 70% of its workforce does NOT reside in Sedona, they drive in from surrounding towns like Cottonwood. A study was done and it showed that one needed to earn $84.50/hour to purchase a median priced home in Sedona.
In regards to Prescott, they are right behind Sedona. Prescott mainly consists of wealthy retirees. While it has its spots of low-income areas, they are usually the meth heads and hippie wanna-bees, they are subjected to live in less desirable and flood prone areas. The workforce that comes to Prescott drives in from PV and CV. It's amazing to watch the line of cars driving INTO Prescott in the AM on Highway 89 and then in the PM, watch them drive OUT of Prescott. The same goes for Highway 69.
So don't take it personally, Prescott is that way.

The job market out in Prescott is very bad. Most jobs are blue collar and go for about $7 per hour. Medical care is somewhat scarce. Most people will go to Phoenix to get specialty and better medical care.

Relocating to Prescott, AZ
Good evening from New Hampshire. My wife and I are debating whether to choose Payson or Prescott as a new residence. We've visited Arizona many times to see friends but they reside in Phoenix. I am perplexed as to why the homes in payson cost more than Prescott? Can anyone give me some advice as to pros and cons for both towns? I do plan on heading out there and spending a couple of weeks in one place and coming back to visit the other in the same manner. I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback.

Both towns will be very similar as far as topography and weather. I hardly ever see more than a couple degrees difference in the daily highs/lows between the towns. One thing I have noticed is that a lot of times Payson will get rain/snow and Prescott won't, and sometimes the opposite is true.
As far as housing prices, my guess is that Payson is higher because of limited availability. It's a much smaller town. Also, Prescott Valley and Chino Valley prices are much lower than Prescott, so Prescott itself isn't as cheap compared with Payson as the other two towns.
Population of Prescott is about 45,000. I think Payson is between 10,000 and 15,000, so that's probably the biggest difference. If you add in Prescott's tri-city area (includes Prescott Valley and Chino Valley), then the pop here is somewhere around 85,000. That means that Prescott shopping/restuarants, etc has quite a bit more to offer than Payson. Prescott has pretty much everything available in the way of a mall and big box stores (WalMart, KMart, Target, Kohl's, Best Buy, furniture stores, Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, Sam's Club, etc). Payson has a Home Depot and a WalMart and a handful of retail stores.
I think both towns have a lot to offer - it just depends on which one you like better and how frequently you want to drive to Phoenix for shopping.
Also, when you come to Prescott, be sure and check out the downtown. I notice that Prescott has much more of a downtown district, whereas Payson doesn't. Again, it will just depend on your preference.

Prescott experienced a faster RE boom than did Payson. Prescott RE markets went berserk from 2002-early 2006. Payson seen growth but not as insane as did Prescott. So the fall will be greater and harder than Payson.
Which is better? All depends on who you talk to. Payson residents will say Payson is better and Prescott residents will say Prescott. To some, the size of Prescott is now a detriment. More stores but more problems and traffic. Drive down Highway 69 or Highway 89A in Prescott during rush hour and then drive Highway 260 or Highway 87 in Payson. BIG DIFFERENCE! The Prescott highways will be full of traffic jams.
Prescott has photo radar and other BIG CITY things. I believe Prescott has lost the small town tradition and feel that it ONCE had. I remember back in the 90's, Prescott was a REAL nice small town. Then in the late 90's things changed fast and by 2009, it is NOT the same town. Ask any resident who has lived in Prescott since the 80's or early 90's and they will admit that Prescott has grown and lost that small town charm. Some are fighting to keep it alive but I believe it is dead & gone, and gone forever.
I believe Payson still offers the 80's Prescott small town. Visit both areas, drive around during rush hour and you will see a night and day difference. Payson resembles what Prescott WAS back in the 80's and early 90's before Prescott growth took over.
