It's gotten a little bad since this post was set up in 2006:
Here's some bad things about it nowadays (2009):
1. Construction (they are widening the roads and it's making it difficult to get from P.V. to Prescott in 15 minutes anymore. Now it's like 25-30 minutes now! And the Gurley St./Sheldon St. intersection is getting dangerous. People that are on the Gurley St. one change their minds in the last second and cut in front of you to go to Sheldon...ShEEsh!! Talking about an accident waiting to happen very soon).
2. Cabs/Taxis (they are getting way too expensive now. In 2006, a cab to Prescott from P.V. was only around $20-$27. Now it's closer to $30-$35!! They need a transit bus one of these days, FOR REAL!!)
3. The nightlife (Whiskey Row used to be a lot of fun back in 2006. But now since the economy got bad, there's not enough customers anymore and the drinks/food is more expensive too now. A glass of wine is now $3.75-$5.50 now, when in 2006 it was normally around $2.50-$3.50).
4. Too much congestion (the roads are getting worst since they widened it and such).
5. Need more running/jogging groups (there's only 1 now (in Prescott), that I'm a member of, but sometimes it's hard to go, because they start at 5:30pm and I can't make it til after 5:45. There needs to be more local running/jogging groups and such).
6. Lower the prices of apartments and houses in Prescott (I do love Prescott better than P.V., but it's too expensive to live there now).

Just kidding. People are very nice here (in the Prescott area) and nobody cares if you are from California or anywhere else. I have yet to meet someone who asked me where I moved from and then got angry and said they wish I would leave. On the contrary, I have found that people are quite friendly. Life is fairly laid back, so people are more relaxed then say LA or Phoenix or New York.
I think that people use the forum as a place to vent. People are much more outspoken when they can hide behind the anonimity of the forum. Come visit and see for yourself. The reality is that many, many people have moved here within the last 10 years and they would be quite hypocritical if they were to be angry with you for doing the same thing.
History becomes cloudy and nostalgia is glorified, because for some reason, people like to think that the past was better than the present. The reality is somewhere in the middle. Certain things may have been better in the past and certain things are better now. Personally, I like to believe that the present and future always glow brighter than the past.

HAAA! Speak for yourself! When I first moved here (Prescott Valley), people asked me where I was originally from (Texas) and they laughed and were never nice to me since!!! This includes Prescott too.
They aren't too nice to people who are from Texas or anywhere in the southeast. Lot's of racism and discrimination too here, I've noticed. Especially if you're a female. If you don't have long hair (that is blonde too), a deep tan (looks like a brown leather bag), and don't have children, they treat you like crap!! I've never been treated with such discrimination until I moved here (I have medium brown hair shoulder length hair , a medium-fair skin, and have no children). They notice these things and already make up their own conclusions about me, just because I don't look, act, or live my life like them.
It sucks, really, here now! I guess back in the days it was better, huh?
And every damn man here always asks me, "Do you have kids?". What the heck! I go on a date and he's already wanting kids or prefers women with kids already! This place sucks when it comes to dating too (most men here never take a shower or anything like that, haven't shaved in days, some don't have hardly a tooth in their mouth, and are always late showing up).
This is just what I've seen, experienced, and know about since living here for 5 years now. Just my opinion.

You have to remember that some of the people posting here are Realtors, so they play-up the town, that is their livelihood, new residents.
What kills me is when there is a black person in Prescott (rare, as the black population is less than .5%), yet when they walk into a Costco or some store, people stare like they never seen a black person before. Usually the old retiree's from The Ranch at Prescott or the hillbillies from Dewey or Mayer are the ones who stare.
What I also hate is when I run into people I work with, while I am off work, due to this town being so small. Can't even go to the store without seeing someone I don't want to see. Forget Gateway Mall, lame and old. On my days off I just hit the road to Phoenix and add to the carbon footprint by burning 200 miles worth of fuel. One needs to getaway from Prescott, as the town starts to close in on you.
I hate the lack of diversity here, the way people stare, the lack of shops, restaurants, things to do, etc. Whiskey Row - that got lame and played out within 1 week. It's a tourist trap. Parking around the Courthouse is ridiculous and the Prescott parking Nazi's come out ticketing people.
OK, I am done ranting...

...and some people are travel agents, so they play-down the town, that is their livelihood, getting people to want to leave Prescott.

Exactly my feelings!! You said everything.
Yes, there is a lack of things to do. It gets old, tiring, and boring (and not to mention you get sick almost every week) going to Whiskey Row. Go get drunk or intoxicated, is what a lot of them do (I used to too!!). So lame.
Yeah, a lot look like they have never seen a black person or Asian person before! They treat them like crap, but they don't mind the Native Americans (Indians) and Hispanics/Mexicans here. Even them too act like snobs and have attitudes also. So lame!!
The cops here are horrible too. They'll stop for you for nothing. About 2 months ago, I was walking down the street to go to a nice little restuarant that I've gone to before. Well, these 2 cops drove up and stopped me. "We would like to talk to you. We've got some complaints from folks saying that you have been asking men to buy you drinks"...."EXCUSE ME??!!", I said to the cop.
It seems like people have been calling the cops on me, because of the rumors/gossip they told about me...
To make it clearer, NO I'VE NEVER ASKED PEOPLE TO BUY ME DRINKS! And there have been rumors about me since I've lived here.
All he did was, "Well, just don't let it happen again." He didn't believe me obviously...
Yeah, they are NAZI COPS, stop you for something you never have done, EVER....So sickening.
When I lived in Phoenix, I was never treated that way, EVER!! I had lots of friends there (most are gone or moved away) and never had a run in with a cop, til that one time 2 months ago, here. Wished I was back in Phoenix, for real!!
HAH!! Gateway Mall is a damn joke! It's so tiny, I can walk around it in like 15 minutes and I'm done. It's so boring and such. But I do like that Irish Pub they put in beside it. At least there's a tiny bit of excitement there now. Sheeesh!!
Yeah, I go to Phoenix every month (either just for a few hours or for 2 days), just to get out of here for a while and be with the "friendlier" folks (well, some are but at least there never have been rumors about me there).

The Prescott police chief just resigned because of all the "small town" politics going on in the police department. He went in to clean up the corruption and small town politics within the department. He received a lot of resistance and it was hard cleaning up the corruption with the department. Now, time has come and he has to leave, as the resistance and hate for him has grown out of control.
That is what you get with the "good 'ole boys" Prescott and PV politics. This town is horrendous for that.

Exactly! About 2 years I dated a guy who was a cop for Prescott. He seemed like a really cool guy, but about 5 months later I found out that he was a drug dealer on the side and was caught! He was dealing with prostitutes and such. And they found Nazi paraphernalia around his house too! MY GOSH! I can't believe I had ever went out with him a few months prior. He was on the news, internet, and local newspaper.
I think they gave him 10 years in prison for that. YIKES!
The cops here just make me sick, really.

The police put a bad cop in jail for ten years for dealing drugs - that does not sound like corruption to me.

Prescott is just isolated enough to have a glut of jobs. Unless you have something lined up - or are yet another retiree, don't bother.
If those things do apply, have at it. Prescott's lovely.
