The terrain/appearance of Chino Valley vs. Prescott is like night and day. Chino is very flat and is mostly dead grass. Some juniper trees towards the foothills of the mountains but it is a BLEAK desert. The Phoenix desert is much more attractive than CV.
Right now, Hwy 89 is the ONLY route into Prescott. It is a NIGHTMARE Only 2 lanes with the ocassional passing lane. There is ALWAYS an accident on Hgy 89 and they are usually 95% of the time FATALITIES, due to the speeds and they are head-on. There was one 3 days ago that resulted in 2 deaths I believe.

Chino is beautiful lots of hills and wide open space and will be all new construction with current building codes a well planned community.
Baseline capital which has several original Microsoft people and other multi millionaireson board are building a huge project called Del Rio.I cannot post the links here but you can Google them, they just committed to funding a sewage treatment facility to recycle water which is the last major step before things get going.
Buy now you will not be able to touch Chino in a few years unless you are loaded.
Pettrix rarely says anything good about anything, check his post record he is a naysayer about everything. LOL

exlexisnexis is right: Phase 1 of Del Rio Ranch is slated to come out of the ground soon, w/ expected Sept/Oct '08 occupancies of ~800 homes. Also, the City of CV recently approved two additional rezonings from ag land to R-1 development that will add ~1000 more homes, if not more. Hwy 89 & other roads are being expanded; new roads are planned; more traffic lights are planned and CV is going to get a "dreaded newfangled roundabout" [that many of the old-timers dislike]. Yep, growth is happening here. I may have to go find a different small town soon - this'n may grow too much!
IMHO, Hwy 89 is not nearly as bad as Pettrix portrays. Sure, there are accidents, and some are fatals - just like on any other road. I drive it often between CV & Prescott but have not even had a "close call" and have not seen any serious accidents, much less fatalities. Regardless, if one believes the Courier, more/most occur on Hwy 69 and/or 89A. FWIW, I think the fatality of which Pettrix spoke was either the single-veh rollover that occurred at about 1:00 a.m. on the mountainous part of 89 near Jerome - quite far from Hwy 89 in CV & Prescott - or the single-veh crash on/near 89A & Fain Rd while evading arrest in which the driver (DUI) died.

Actually, there IS another way into Prescott from Chino Valley. Many people use it. It is a nice back way that takes you into Prescott via Iron Springs road I think. I don't remember what it is called, but it is nice and easy to drive.

It's Williamson Valley Road. It's a pretty way to go, but probably a little longer, plus plenty of traffic during rush hour, too. Plans are in the works to widen both Hwy 89 and Williamson Valley Rd. Plus Glassford Hill Rd will eventually run from PV all the way to CV. Just like everywhere else in the "tri-city" area, traffic is increasing, and it will be an incovenience while improvements are made. But, hopefully, it will be smooth sailing eventually.
If you can avoid the busy times, though, traffic isn't all that bad.

I had a home in Paulden, which is next to Chino Valley, and it was really nice, but be careful when looking for property. The big thing to worry about is water and whether it's in a flood plain. Good luck in your search and getting out of Phoenix is like leaving CA nowadays.

OOPS, forgot to mention that HWY 89 was a nightmare 5 years ago and I have heard it is worse now. Roads are NEVER built to accomodate the growth, so that is really something to think about if you plan to commute.

For entertainment there, there is The Log Cabin Bar, The Crazy Horse Saloon, and Darlene's. There's a couple of others, but I didn't care for them though.

Speaking of bars
Does anyone know if that bar down HWY 89 in Paulden towards the 40 is still there? I can't remember the name of it, but the guy who owned it, I think was Jerry. It was a gold mine of a place in it's day and I thought it could be again, but he was tired of it and just kept the bar area running. A lot of folks from Paulden hung out there.
