It's gonna be interesting yo see the final results. Indeed, it was a tragedy.

Up until last year, my company provided staging services for this group, James Ray International. He teaches a "Spiritual Warrior" philosophy. I do know that Angel Camp is very difficult to reach and is remote. Unimproved dirt road that is quite hilly. No cell phone service available at that location. I'm sure the lack of accessability contributed to the challenges emergency services faced in providing a proper and timely response. The location and the teachings are "off the beaten track" shall we say. I would imagine that this incident signals the end of Angel Camp and James Ray International.

A completely preventable tragedy. There are those who play with the spirit world and make a lot of money doing it. "Don't pay to [learn how to] pray." Shame on James Ray and his bank account.

I would agree that it was a completely preventable tragedy based on my experiences at Angel Camp and JRI. Other than that, business ethics prevent me from commenting further.

I heard about it yesterday. It's such a tragedy. Sedona is only 45 minutes from where I live at. I had heard about that retreat and seen it, driving through Sedona. That was ridiculous when it was still very hot outside (too darn hot to sit in a tent, or whatever it was, and sweat it out). That's just dangerous.

Right, OK
Well, after living in Sedona for a good portion of my twenties... 1993 to 1998, doing the "holding down 5 jobs just to survive" thing and just about hitting my head against a wall because of all the alien abducted New Agers trying to convince me to join them in their beliefs, I finally left.
This is so sad. What's even more sad it that they paid that much money. Why would anyone pay THAT much money to sit in a tent and sweat?
Reminds me of that story from the late 80's or early 90's in Sedona where some dude sold tickets to people thinking that a UFO was going to come out of Bell Rock. He split town with the money...
P.T. Barnum was right.

I don't think they paid that much money for the sweat. I took the article to read they paid for a retreat, which included among other things, a sweat.
Many Native American ceremonies were being "copy-catted" by New Agers, and many Native's shun New Agers. This is a very sad example of people being taken advantage of by what is referred to as a plastic medicine man.
Our sweat lodge ceremonies have been practiced for centuries. There is a very specific way to go about it. Not to mention the fact that, we humans were probably in a lot better physical condition in the olden days.

Excellent post. Your paragraph two says it all as far as I'm concerned.
