Can anyone compare the 2 as far as crime, aff housing ($200,000), shopping, jobs, taxes & climate not 2 hot or cold. P.S. pet friendly. P.S.S. We will probably rent before we buy! P.S.S. I really like medium size towns around 60,000- 70,000. Thanks for your help.

Rio Rancho and Prescott are two very different cities.

To start off, Prescott is MUCH more expensive. I doubt you can find AYTHING in the 200,000 range, unless you wanted to go to Prescott Valley. Prescott is also miles away from Phoenix - Where as Rio Rancho is a suburb of Albuquerque and is growing very rapidly.

Jobs would be better in the Rio Rancho area, thanks to Albuquerque being so close, Not sure on taxes, however.

You cannot find anything IN Prescott for $200K unless you're looking for a manufactured home. In Prescott Valley, you can just squeeze in to the bottom end of site-builts. The same goes for Chino Valley.

As far as the weather goes, it's hard to beat the Prescott area. We are at 5,000 feet, so the weather is very mild year-round. We are about 15 degrees cooler than Phoenix and 5 degrees cooler than Sedona.

Crime is comparatively low for the Prescott area as compared to towns of similar size (~60,000 people).

I do not know what "pet-friendly" means. I don't know of any city that restricts pets, except for requiring them to be on leashes and requiring you to pick up afer them.

Hi Everyone,
It is 2010...the government is continuing to call this a recession..when it has been worse than that,as we know.
A roundabout way of stating that the $200,000 house is now much cheaper..so
the aforementioned comment of four years ago means less now.
You want to own a home in Prescott,Phoenix or maybe Rio Rancho? Buy it now.
My advice is worth every penny that you are paying.

Having lived and worked in both Albuquerque and Prescott, here's my take. Prescott housing is extremely high priced. Albuquerque's crime rate is extremely high, per capita. Both have the same climate, with Abluquerque having slightly milder Winters - Summer is pretty much the same. I found Prescott to be a prettier town, but there are many more things to do in the Albuquerque area, and the 1-hour trek up to Santa Fe is a nice diversion. Albuquerque is the largest city in NM, and it's smaller than Tuscon, AZ. Prescott is an hour away from Phoenix if you really feel the need to get into the big city.

Overall, if I had to choose again between the two I'd have a difficult time. It's much more affordable to live in the Albuquerque area, and jobs are much easier to come by - but the schools and crime rate are simply awful. Prescott is a much prettier town, but it's extrememly expensive and jobs are practically non-existant. Weather isn't really a factor, as both towns have almost exactly the same climate - Prescott did seem to get more snow in winter, but temps were pretty much the same. I'd probably lean toward Albuquerque for the better job outlook and more things to do. Just make sure you get into a good neighborhood with good schools and you'll be OK, and you'll get A LOT more house for your money in the ABQ area. Expensive housing in ABQ is cheap housing in prescott.

We thought about ABQ as well before deciding on the Prescott area. My wife had lived in ABQ in the early 90's and loved it, but when we drove through and researched ABQ, we found that it was too big of a city with too much crime.

I know there are other sites out there that allow you to compare cities.. have you tried them? I wish Citydata did that.

There is alot of data about the city on the citydata homepage then click on the city you want to find out about, but nothing compares to going and seeing it in person....my 2 cents.
