Some people are fans of individual players and others are more for a team. When I was young my aunt who lived in Pennsylvania and who worked for Penn State and Pitt U introduced me to Dan Marino. I was already a Steelers fan even though I am from NY (because she was a huge influence on me) but back to the story. Dan thought he would go to Pittsburgh, and every time I would visit her, i'd see him and he was always very nice to me and would even throw the ball back and forth for a little while if he had time. She told me he was going to be in the NFL in a few years and I was kind of star struck by that fact and the fact that he made the time for a kid( 10 years younger than him,same birthdate 9/15). Go figure, he goes to Miami. I did follow him there and eventually the Dolphins became my 2nd team. The Steelers are always my #1, but I root for both unless they play each other.

I didn't say break off the friendship just that we can't talk football anymore
