Every time I look at the geography of Divisional alignments, the perfectionist in me wants to scream. I just did a quick and meaningless geographical review of team locations vs league alignments and the following makes logical sense but ain't going anywhere.
- AFC: Buffalo and Baltimore should switch divisions. Bills should go from East to North and Colts go from North to East.
- NFC: Dallas and Carolina should switch divisions. Cowboys should go from East to South, and Panthers go from South to East.

I'd also like to see NFL realignment. Here's my proposed changes:

NFC
*Dallas from NFC East to NFC West (allows Cowboys to have a minimum of three built-in 4 PM games)
*Carolina from NFC South to NFC East
*St. Louis from NFC West to NFC South

AFC
*Miami from AFC East to AFC South (could have nice Florida rivalry with Jacksonville)
*Baltimore from AFC North to AFC East
*Indianapolis from AFC South to AFC North (Indianapolis and Cincinnati are a little more than 100 miles apart)

That will never happen

Well, as long as we're proposing things that won't ever happen, I would like to see the Colts put back in the NFC. There are still some of us who remember that before the merger, they weren't an AFL team.

Dallas is not going leaving the East, they will not separate from their rivals in that division. Fans don't want it, Jerry doesn't want it, it won't happen.

Wanting to move Buffalo from the east will not happen. The AFC east exists for the same reasons the NFC east does, to protect long standing rivalries.

The Miami Dolphins were very outspoken about their desire to remain in the AFC East when realignment occurred in 2002. They are not leaving the Bills, Patriots, and Jets for a division with the Jags, Titans, and Texans.

In the NFC East, I'd love to see Washington, Philly, NYG and Baltimore in the same division...

In the AFC North, I'd love to see Indy, Cincy, Pittsburgh and Cleveland in the same division...

If AFC and NFC could be mixed up, I'd love to see Chicago, Indy, Cincy and Detroit all in the same division; however, lets be honest, none of this is ever going to happen due to long standing rivalries/history etc....

The NFC East is the highest rated and biggest money earning division in football, they will never touch it even though Dallas is far from geographically aligned

I do; remember the Coastal Division? LA, SF, Atlanta and Baltimore, a very strange alignment...

I recently re-watched "NFL'68", narrated by John Facenda--great program, with imaginative writing by James Green...

MassVt and Fred314X are right. Before the two leagues merged in 1970 the NFL reshaped their divisions in the late 60's due to New Orleans and Atlanta being awarded franchises. Here is how it was stacked up:

Eastern Conference:
Century Division-Cleveland, St. Louis, New Orleans, Pittsburgh
Capitol Division-Dallas, New York, Washington, Philadelphia

Western Conference:
Coastal Division-Baltimore, Los Angeles, Atlanta, San Francisco
Central Division-Minnesota, Green Bay, Chicago, Detroit

with only 8 road games travel doesn't really matter much in the NFL. it's not like Baseball or Basketball.

they'll never touch the NFC East, ever.
