Disney owns both ESPN and ABC; ABC had been losing money on Monday Night Football for quite some time. Disney figured it could make more money (or lose less money) for ABC by dumping Monday Night Football, and increase the audience (by raising demand for cable, no doubt) for ESPN at the same time.
ABC always had difficulty juggling its prime-time schedule to accommodate Monday Night Football, and difficulty dealing with affiliates who didn't want to show the games at the network's given time slot, even during the heyday of the show's highest ratings.
