Why did the Raiders leave LA in the first place ? Did they go there just to prove a point knowing they would be in Oakland soon enough anyway ?

Noob enough question I know but the last time I actually watched a lot of NFL is when the Raiders were actually in LA. When it went off of the TV I had no idea they were in Oakland for a few years.

How ya doing Brian?

I don't think Al Davis had grandiose images of selling out The L.A. Coliseum, but he sort of expected a better than average crowd than he was getting from his previous 23 seasons in Oakland. And it's not that the Raiders crowds were poor by any stretch as the Oakland -Alameda Coliseum only had capacity for maybe 53,000 or so but the club drew well there, all things considered. His first few years in Los Angeles actually weren't half bad. The Raiders won the Super Bowl in 1983 after moving to L.A. the year before. The next season saw some good attendance figures, particularly with the AFC West division clubs. Denver for example played in front of just short of 95,000 people in their 1984 game at the Coliseum. The Broncos/Raiders rivalry really heated up by that time but actually the AFC West was probably the best division in football through that part of the 1980's and the Seahawk and Charger games drew well too. The only exception was the Kansas City Chiefs who would like to forget that era altogether.

As the years went by, attendance slowly but methodically dropped. Several things were mentioned as to why, not the least of which was the part of town they were in. Davis by that time had been looking toward a new location and looked at sites near The Hollywood Park racetrack, Carson, and of all places-Irwindale! You'd have to go to Irwindale to see what I mean there! I've been through there several times in my day, but not recently. I went to two Bronco/Raider games at the Coliseum in the 1980's.

After several years of decline the Raiders improved under head coach Art Shell and in 1990 went to the AFC Championship game against Buffalo. By that time it didn't matter much as by the next year Al Davis announced that he was eventually moving the franchise back to Oakland. His attendance figures were getting less and less, and even the Broncos and Seahawks were only drawing maybe 55 to 60 thousand people. Non divisional games would be less than that, and some didn't even pull 40,000 people. They returned to Oakland in 1995.

Doin good, you ?

That makes sense then, I used to watch LA play on TV on a weekend at about 2 or 3AM I believe it was on. The games themselves were cut to bits so all you really saw was actual play minus the timeouts etc. I think it disappeared off of TV in about 1994 which explains why in 1999/2000 with me getting the internet that I was surprised to find out they were in Oakland again.
