Draft bust Vernon Gholston believes that Rex Ryan never gave him a chance - Shutdown Corner - NFL*Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Quote:
Saying that his departure from the Jets was a "needed move," Gholston sounded quite entitled when discussing his status under Ryan. "Being a first-round pick, you would have hoped for more [of a chance]," he said.
This attitude will cement his bust status.

So it is not necessarily their fault that they are busts. But nonetheless the bust stigma will be carried with them forever.

I don't doubt that Gholston himself would endorse your theory 100%. But to blame the franchise rather than the player...don't you think there's something sounding wrong there?

I'm a Buckeye Fan and when the Jets took him that high in the draft I thought they made a mistake. I Knew he would put up great numbers at the combine- which he did. Don't get me wrong he was a great college player- he just didn't have a lot of pass rush moves and mainly used a bull rush and his good straight line speed to his advantage. I also thought a position change from a down lineman to a 3-4 backer he would need time to develope which I must admit he didn't really get the time and opportunity to do that with the Jets.

I still think he becomes a solid Pro- nowhere near 1st round status though.
