How many kickers start out as soccer players? And how many soccer players are black? Just something to think about.
I'm black and I played soccer, I sucked though, the only reason I made the team was because no one at my school tried out for the soccer team so who ever tried out made the team. Guess that's because my HS was an all black school on the westside of Atlanta...lol. I was the only American black on the team though, all the other kids were Ethiopian or Nigerian. Didn't really like it but it was good exercise and conditioning for basketball season, plus it got me in with some of the Ethiopian guys sisters who wasn't giving me any play before that.
Dunno why anybody would sneer at placekicking in the NFL.
Look at Phil Dawson - he started at $250,000+/year when signed by Cleveland in 1999, increasing to $1,000,000/annually for the last several years, and is being paid over $3,000,000 this season.
Not a bad gig in the NFL, plus very little chance of being concussed or crippled for life.

I'll take that anyday of the week. Shoot I'd take the practice squad anyday of the week. Give me 200K a year, I don't care if I don't play, I don't even care I don't get a chance to dress out. I would be super stoked being 22 making that.

Remember one of the all time greatest kickers was Morton Anderson. He played long after his first team members retired from injuries or were past their prime.
