I am a huge Niners fan so I love Joe Montana and think he is the best ever. But, I will admit Tom Brady is very close to Joe Montana. Lately, Tom has faltered in a couple of games just like Joe did in his final years. At this current time, I still give the edge to Joe. If Tom wins, I might have to concede. If Tom loses, he is still a close 2nd. Going to 5 Super Bowls and playing in countless playoff games are just too much for me to ignore. Tom gets the press because he deserves it.

without the tuck rule they don't even make one SB, then they're down to 2 and only win b/c of place kicking.

I agree! The kicker is the best ever. He guided the team down the field for all 60 minutes. He was getting pounded by a strong defense front. He was on the sidelines reviewing past plays, understanding why he missed. He got up each time that he was slammed to the ground. In the end, I bet his jersey was really dirty. So, I agree, the kicker is the best of all time.

Tom would have to win 5 SB to go pass Joe since he was 4-0 in 4 SB appearances. If Tom wins that would make him 4-1 in 5 SB and would need one more to make up for the 1 loss in SB 42.

SB wins is not the end all, be all to greatness. If that were the case, then Peyton Manning would just be an "average" QB and we all know that isn't the case...

I know that, I was saying what needs to happen for Tom to be considered greater than Joe

So a QB who needed 5 SB's to win 4 is on a higher level than a QB who needed 4 SB's to win 4?

so why didn't they just punch it in the end zone when they had the chance both those times if he's so great? took a FGK to finish what Brady couldn't. See? I can play too.

if he was so good it wouldn't have had to come down to 2 and 3 point wins with game winning kicks by a lowly FG kicker, and needing a bogus tuck rule and 13min.? delay to even get to one of those SB's.

not to mention the whole Belli"cheat" scandal.

add in the hype of es*n b/c it's an east coast team and you get what you have now. es*n is very powerful on impressionable minds.

how is a team who shouldn't even got to one SB and won them by 2 and 3 points a dynasty? es*n has magazines and website hits to sell to its advertisers.

As always depends on who/what you are listening to and how you form your opinions. Number of this, number of that, how many or no SB's, I just don't think it is that easy or that cut and dried.

You can't label someone the best quarterback based on nothing more than super bowl titles. Obviously, if someone wins four or five titles, they're doggone good - no questions. But to diminish, say, Dan Marino just because he couldn't win the big one seems off base to me.

You have to look at what they had to work with, in terms of players on offense and the coaching staff. And then you have to factor in whether it was a lack of offense that was the reason for not winning titles or if it was something else.

My thought has always been, a great quarterback can make a bad team competitive. They might go just 8 and 8 (at best), but put Manning or Brady on the worst team and they'll be competitive. Put them on a team that can at least play and run offenses well and they'll be at least a playoff team. Put them on a team with balance, and they'll be contenders for the Super Bowl. Whether they win it will come down to how well the parts fit together.

But I think Elway proved the point I'm making. It's ridiculous to say that Elway, at 37 or 38 was better than he was in his prime, but that's when he won his titles. He didn't win two super bowls until he got Terrell Davis and more importantly, not until Denver got physical on defense.
