Fair catch kicks can only occur when a member of the receiving team signals for, and successfully makes, a fair catch (or is awarded a fair catch after a kick-catch interference penalty). The receiving team then has the option of resuming play either by snap or fair catch kick. If the receiving team elects the fair catch kick option, their kicker can make a field goal attempt from the spot where the fair catch was made and the opposing team must line up at least ten yards downfield. The kicker then may either place kick the ball from a teammate's hold (a kickoff tee may be used in high school) or drop kick the ball. At this point, all general rules apply as for a field goal attempt from scrimmage. The clock starts when the ball is kicked. Three points are awarded for kicking the ball through the uprights.
Fair catch kick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are only 21 known attempts in NFL history. Of those 21, only 5 have been successful, the last occuring 36 years ago. The last unsuccessful attempt was in 2008 (there were actually 2 unsuccessful fair catch kicks that year, tying the record for most attempts league-wide in a single season. The fair catch kick 'flourished' between 1964 and 1971, with 10 attempts in that 8-year span, including 3 of the 5 successful fair catch kicks in NFL history.

Personally, I had never even heard of the fair catch kick until I saw the 49ers attempt the one in the 1989 Divisional Playoff Game.

A very interesting, obscure play.

That Raul Alegre fair catch kick off an onside kick may be the single strangest play in NFL history!
