Steve didn't say that.. he wrote it.. but the narrator was John Facenda... but you probably know that.

Sad day for football and a sad day for Philly as well.

It seems the NFL Network has removed some of the luster recently but wow what great work done by NFL FIlms and Steve in particular

RIP

I have heard quite a few people who actually think Sabol did the voice and not Facenda. I think the only voice work Sabol did was to narrate some of the intros.

Facenda died in '84. Sabol must have done narration afterwards.

If you want to capture the essence of Steve Sabol and NFL Films, then this might be the single most compelling 1 + hour of presentation I've ever seen. This is an incredible commentary about the 1967 Ice Bowl in Green Bay:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=zaAmQVoGWPI

Allocate an hour of your life to watch this clip, it's astonishing interviews of participants combined with highlights.

A great, great installment of this is at the 1 hour and 5 minute mark when Steve Sabol regales the very intimate post-game atmosphere inside Lombardi's house, and NFL Films has the cameras rolling as the proceedings are taking place. Just incredible.

I've watched a lot of NFL films in my lifetime. I just had to watch this again before coming to the conclusion this is the finest hour in the history of NFL films, and I am not even a fan of either team. When you combine the interviews, the rarity of some, with the highlights, the music, and the backdrop, this transcends sport.

Somewhere in all my umpteen VHS tapes of various NFL related stuff that I've taped off the tube over the last few decades, I have that Ice Bowl on tape. What a great documentary it is too! I was a senior in high school when I was watching that game on the tube with my dad. Just picturing that Klondike cold when the game started, whew my poor arthritic knees are rattling right now just thinking about it.

Several things about that video I remember, one of them was talking about that Klondike cold itself. I remember Cowboy defensive back Cornell Green saying, "Man, you've just got to give respect to those fans sitting in the stands. At least we were able to run around the field but those fans sat in those stands the whole game. You got to give them credit!" Another one was I believe Leroy Jordon (I think) who said the frostbite he wound up getting affects him to this day.

And Mike0421 is right. It is a great video of one of the most memorable games in NFL history. BTW thanks Mike for the link!
