Ex-NFL star, actor Alex Karras dies

Former NFL player and actor Alex Karras died Wednesday in Los Angeles, a family spokesman said. He was 77.

"After a heroic fight with kidney disease, heart disease, dementia and for the last two years, stomach cancer," Karras died at his home, surrounded by family, the spokesman said.

Karras, a defensive lineman and four-time Pro Bowl selection who played for the Detroit Lions from 1958 to 1970, went on to star in the 1980s sitcom “Webster” and also played the horse-punching Mongo in the 1974 movie “Blazing Saddles."

His football days were before my time - but I remember him on the Webster program. My prayers of comfort to the family.

He was before my time as well, but I do know this, he's the only guy I ever saw who punched out a horse -- in Blazing Saddles.

He was a good one. RIP Big Guy.

In my time he was in the booth for monday night football with Cosell,Meridth and Gifford.
My son in the 70's & 80's pen palled with Allyn Phipps owner of the Bronco's,we were guests in his suite,he sent many soueveniors to us,AFC signed football, jerseys, etc. and signed gate passes from from monday night announcing crew.I guess this was when pro football was more a game and more human. In 1988 he called and told my son a Bronco jacket was waiting at Logan street training center. He also sent a pointsetta every christmas, quite a man.We still have his kind letter's.
