I've always wondered about the names of the following teams. Does anyone know the origins of their names?
  • Albany Firebirds (AF2)
  • Boise Burn (AF2)
  • Buffalo Destroyers (AFL)
  • Chicago Rockets (All-America Football Conference)
  • Cincinnati Rockers (AFL)
  • Cleveland Bulldogs (NFL)
  • Cleveland Thunderbolts (AFL)
  • Cleveland Rams (NFL)
  • Los Angeles Avengers (AFL)
  • Los Angeles Bulldogs (American Football League II)
  • Memphis Maniax (XFL)
  • Ohio Glory (World League of American Football)
  • Orlando Rage (XFL)

I have no idea in terms of the leagues outside of the NFL, but I know that several NFL/AFL teams got their nicknames according to the baseball field they played at. The football teams were either named after the baseball team or had a similar mascot name.

The Cleveland Rams were named after Fordham University. I reckon the original owner (he was a lawyer), attended that school.

The team moved to St. Louis and replaced their team, the Gunners.

Those Arena Football teams were named after baseball teams and not other football teams?
