The point is which is better - to keep a good coach and have constant player turnover - or to keep good players and turnover the coaches when the team does bad?

Giants are a good example this year - let's say they go 4-12. They have had a good track record in the past with 2 SBs.

So would you fire Coughlin or get rid of decent players?
The coach decides who is and who is not on the team. You give the coach a few years to rebuild the team, if it is not working out you fire the coach. Coughlin has been there long enough that the team there is the team he built. I do not think teams really differ in deciding on letting coaches or players go. Your example does not really show any differences because the Eagles were going downhill fast when Reid got fired. Pats have not won a sb for a while, but they have been making deep playoff runs consistently for more than a decade with BB.

Is this true? I thought GMs had the final word, coaches have a say in it but they are not the final decision or are they?

I realize the team I follow has a different structure than other 31 teams but I still thought it was the GMs decision, who stays, who goes.

Each team is different. And some coaches also hold other positions. If I remember correctly Reid held another title at the same time as being head coach.
