This is Clark Hunts statement
When my father Lamar set out to start a new league to rival the NFL in 1959, the first person he went to visit was Bud Adams. Lamar, Bud and the other visionary owners of the American Football League believed that fans across the country would embrace pro football if given the chance, and they were right.
Although Lamar's Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs and Bud's Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans were natural rivals on the field, Lamar and Bud enjoyed a friendship that spanned five decades and saw the emergence of pro football as America's Game.
Our family will always appreciate Bud's spirited and enthusiastic support of my father's "foolish" idea, and we are saddened today by the news of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the Adams family and the Tennessee Titans organization.

Good post Marvin! A few words about the "foolish" idea.

It was a term ("Foolish Club") that the original owner of the Oakland Raiders Wayne Valley coined to describe the 8 AFL owners. The reason that phrase was coined is the shoestring budgets a number of the owners had, particularly Valley himself as the Raider franchise was in over its head after just 2 seasons. Hunt and Adams were well funded though, as was Ralph Wilson of Buffalo.

But Adams wasn't foolish. Bullheaded, yes. He went through several head coaches before Bum Philips came in and brought Houston its best years from 1975 to 1980 and sadly got fired for it. A few years later Adams publicly admitted that firing Philips was a huge mistake.

He was a guy who didn't give two flips about the media, heh in fact there are a few youtubes ought there with Bud Ams flipping the bird to either the media, the fans, or the opposition!

Speaking of the term "well funded" in post #3, Adams (or should I say his bank account) came in pretty handy as Al Davis was named AFL commissioner in 1966. The leagues were starting to raid each others organizations for players. And what got the NFL to the negotiating table in a hurry was when Bud Adams signed Mike Ditka away from the Chicago Bears. And the week afterwards signed John Brodie of the 49ers.

Both players had one year left on their current contracts and these players weren't going to try very damn hard in the last year of their current deals, that's for sure. Those offers Adams made were double over what Ditka and Brodie were making. When the two leagues merged, both players went back to their clubs. But Brodie got checks from Adams and Ditka did as well, which was part of the terms of the merger agreement.
