Cutler has not been as good as we (Chicago) has expected up to this point. But up until 2013 he has had no help on offense. He was the most sacked QB in 2010, and among the 5 most sacked in 2011, and 2012. Does anybody remember the Giants game where we had to take him out after the 2nd quarter cause we couldnt protect him after getting sacked 7 or so times? + until this past season he hasnt had any true receivers to throw to.

Also the offensive coordinator has never been consistent since coming to Chicago. So every year he needs to learn a new book every year.

If we give him a decent O line, a few weapons to throw to, and a steady coach and still doesnt excel, I will jump on the Cutler hate bandwagon.

I'm one of the few people that likes his no BS attitude. You wont see him dancing in the end zone when he scores a TD.

He had ALL of that this year and they missed the playoffs, plus in the last game of the season, to win the division, his coach called running play after running play....because he obviously though Jay Cutler could not be trusted to win the game.

And how was the combo of Forte and Marshall last year no help help on offense? I always hear Cutler gets no help...Tom Brady has won Super Bowls with far inferior offensive weapons. So has Big Ben. Enjoy another seven years of Cutler's pouty face as he comes off the field after yet another boneheaded INT.

Is there anyone better that they could sign at this point? Probably not, but they should have let him walk if he wanted to be paid that much. They could have resigned McCown to a cheap one year deal and look to draft their feature qb
While I totally agree he is not a top QB he was the one to have his deal come up last. Next year this time we will be saying the same thing about another QB who just signed a big deal.

What makes you think the QB the Bears could get with the 14th pick will be better than Cutler? Sure they could trade up but that's an entirely different discussion and what they would give up and just how good that prospect is has too many moving parts.

So for argument's sake let's review the QBs taken in the first round at 14 or later from 2001-2010. It's too early to rate guys taken in the last 2 years. This list does not even include the QBs taken just before the 14th pick such as Gabbert, Locker and Ponder:

Tebow
Freeman
Flacco
Quinn
Leinhart
Cutler
Rodgers
Campbell
Losman
Boller
Grossman
Patrick Ramsey

New England O line ALWAYS protected Brady during the SB winning years.... and they always had a clutch defenses that made plays when they had to. Don't kid yourself. What happened in 07 and 11? That's right the Giants got pressure on the QB..and look what the result was?????

Look at most NFL QB's ..give em time they are superstars. Look at ELI.. when the o line was good he was clutch and phenomenal. When the oline sucked(this year) suddenly everyone says he's terrible ...which he was. Cutler would be a very solid QB with a good offensive line. And with a little D he could win a Supe just like any other decent QB can.

Is he elite? NOPE. Probably around 10-15th best. But he is not deserving of this type of criticism..

Heh..well as an outsider who has no interest in da Bears, I think if the Bears had ANY DEFENSE AT ALL...they'd be looking at the playoffs. You put Cutler and this offense coupled with an above average defense and its a SB contender. You can blame Cutler all you want...dead wrong and Bears management recognized that.

The Packer/Viking/Lion fans are VERY happy with this announcement.
I'm a Packer fan, and while Cutler IMO is a tad better than average, he is not an elite QB, and this money could have been better spent.

It is not a matter of blaming Cutler for not making the playoffs. They are paying him as a top qb and he is not one. Even people agreeing with this seem to justify it by saying there is no one better to sign. He may be the best guy available, but they still overpaid by a long shot. Now they will be stuck with a slightly better than average qb taking up a huge part of their salary cap for seven years because they gave him elite qb $
