The Niners were the second best team this year. He's right about a lot of things, including Michael Crabtree. I've never been impressed with Crabtree from the moment he entered the league. Sherman knows receivers and called him mediocre. I was glad someone in the know acknowledged this.
It is now up to the lazy, oft-injured. pretender Crabtree to prove his doubters wrong next season. Frankly, I'd like to see the Niners get rid of him. Certainly there are many others who are better.
Really great to hear this shutdown CB give props to the Niners. I'm sure the respect is mutual.
I'd actually disagree and say that the 49ers were pretty much even with Seattle. If those two teams play four times, they'd split at two apiece. A fifth game would be won by whichever team was playing well at crucial moments on that particular day, and that's pretty much how it played out in the NFC Championship game. Both teams were well beyond what Denver was capable of bringing to the table, and I'd suspect that a healthy SF team would have beaten Denver as well. Now, having said that, supposing that Crabtree catches that pass and SF had made it instead of Seattle, SF would have had entered that game with two signifcant injuries on defense, and it's hard to imagine that Manning wouldn't have exploited that. Still, I think the 49ers would have squeaked out a win as well but it would have been a little more interesting than what we ultimately saw this past weekend.
For the record, it's not a case of sour grapes. I'm not really a hardcore 49ers fan - Cowboys are really my go-to team. It's just that Seattle never really proved to me that they were clearly better than the 49ers. A couple of crucial calls went their way. On the flipside, Seahawks fans could certainly point out that their fastest receiver, Percy Harvin, was injured in that game, and they'd have a legitimate point. The Niners had some injuries as well, though. We could go on and on about it. Doesn't matter. The Seahawks ultimately won, and it's hard to make a case that they weren't the best team this year.
A case can be made. At very least SF had a defense worth talking about. Could even be Arizona.
It really, really would have been interesting to see how the playoffs would have turned out had Arizona been mathematically eligible to make it to the playoffs. They were as good as any team in the NFL in those final few weeks of play.
