We came close to that already, in 1982, when the NFL had an 8-team playoff tournament in each conference because of the strike.

Because the one thing that could have made the 2013 NFL season better was the inclusion of the 10-6 Cardinals and the 8-8 Steelers to the playoffs?

The real shame would be if the second best team in the conference lost a bye - which is what will happen here.

And can there be any doubt that within another decade they'll be adding yet another team? Without any byes, you'll have the good teams clinching payoff spots in November and then having little for which to play. That won't improve the league.

But, it is a business, and most businesses are more interested in turning a short-term profit than in building a solid product over the long-term. And the NFL might just be looking at players who keep getting both bigger and faster, producing more and more devastating health issues as an inevitable result, as well as an associated decline in youth participating in football, and deciding that it's time to reap profits now because the golden goose is getting old and weary.
