DDI, good call. These short lists seem to only include guys from real recent memory.. But Thorpe is one of America's greatest athletes turned football player.
You could arguably add Sammy Baugh to this 'gifted' list too. Guy played 3 different sports, and then set records @ 3 different positions in pro football (QB, DB, & punter). Jim Brown should get some love too, no (?)
Great, gifted dudes have been playing football for over 75 years... not just since the 80s. (peace)
To me Moss always came off as a guy who basically just rolled out of bed and was great. I could be under estimating the amount of work he put into being in shape and practicing routes, but he never came off as a guy who put in a ton of work. But again, I am just saying that from a distant view. When you take that into account, I would say, yes, he is one of the most athletically gifted players we have ever seen.
These were the top - shelf receivers in Randy ' s era, pretty much the 2000-2009 era. For what it's worth, my stance is that he is one of the top 20 receivers of all time. For his era, only Marvin Harrison and Terrell Owens could be argued as better receivers--and I think he was better than Owens...
doesn't seem too much of a stretch to think Moss could have starred in the NBA.
Moss was twice named West Virginia player of the year in basketball in '93 and '94 and as a sophomore in 1992, at the age of 14 years old, he ran for the track team and was the West Virginia state champion in the 100 and 200 meters with times of 10.94 and 21.95,respectively. This was the only year he competed on the track team. He also played center field for the baseball team.
On the football field, Moss led the DuPont Panthers to back-to-back state championships in 1992, 1993, and 1994. He was a star at wide receiver, but also played defensive back, returned kickoffs and punts, and was the team's kicker and punter. In 1994, he was honored as the West Virginia Football Player of the Year. Parade magazine named him to their annual All-American high school football team in 1995 and in 2009 named him one of the 50 greatest high school football players of all time.
