PM is one of those very talented players who seems to make crucial mistakes at the worst times. In playoff games he's just made so many bad decisions... He's certainly one of the most talented QB ever (apart from having no scrambling ability), but he's played consistently when it counts most.
Think of it this way: Manning is almost certainly more talented than Brady, but who would you rather have in a crucial game? While Brady hasn't won a Super Bowl recently (not entirely his fault), he's certainly been better in the playoffs than Manning.
Some players do really well in the regular season, but for whatever reason not in the playoffs, while others are mediocre in the regular season, but exceptional in the playoffs; Manning is definitely the former.
Part of Peyton's legacy (as it currently stands) will always (& unfortunately) be his inability to close out championships the way Montana, Bradshaw, & Brady have/did.. The reason I believe this is, even tho the early-90s Bills completely dominated their conference (which is an awesome feat), fans always remember their inability to close the deal (same theory applies to Tarkenton's '70s Vikings).
But Manning still has some time, & his regular season accomplishments, combined with his recognized, singular cerebral skills is still a damn good reputation, no ?

That's why I put Joe Montana at the top and it's not even close. We've seen Peyton struggle, we've seen Brady, Favre, Elway etc have bad big games. I don't recall Joe Montana playing poorly very often in big games. I'm sure it happened but it was rare.

As far as bad postseason games, Montana had a few.. none in the SB though..
It's ironic that the biggest Playoff moment (The Catch) for Montana came in a game in which he did not play particularly well. He threw 3 picks vs the Cowboys in that game.
I can't pick an ATB QB or GOAT. I have a top 5 which Montana is in, but its simply too hard to say this guy was better than this guy within that list. I have a hard time saying Montana is better than Peyton simply because Montana was 4-0 in SBs while Peyton is 1-2. If I used that formula, then I would have to say that Bradshaw was better than Peyton and I watched Bradshaw play and my eyeballs tell me that he simply was not better than Peyton Manning..
