*well, thought 4 is just eliminate the Thursday night game entirely like it should be [outside week 1 & Thanksgiving], but that's a little too easy .

#1) Every team gets one and only one appearance on Thursday football, and whichever 2 teams play that Thursday game, those 2 teams get the bye's the previous week: Week 1 will have the Super Bowl champion like it usually does and week 17 will have no game like it usually does, so to make up for the symmetric 16 weeks, the 2 teams playing in Dallas & Detroit on Thanksgiving will get the bye the previous week. And to those people who think bye week's can't work in week 1 or week 15 remember before the Texans in 2002 there were only 31 teams so at least ONE team had a bye EVERY week.
Pro's: With a full week off, instead of 3 days, the game will probably be more crisper and fluid, even if it's between two crappy teams.
Cons: Don't think the players association will go for teams playing 14 or 15 straight weeks. And since every team has to play on Thursday, but can only play one Thursday, has gotta be a logistical nightmare to sort that out.

#2) The people in charge of setting Thursday night games get the master schedule first before NBC, CBS & FOX do; they get both the composite weekly and team schedules. From this list they can pick the 15 games for Thursday night; however to keep NBC/CBS & FOX from getting left out no team can be selected more than 3 times.
Pro's: With the first selection for national TV, even though they are restrained from the 3 team maximum, they'll likely get better games. Whatever week Patriots vs. Broncos is will likely be picked up nationally (either by CBS or NBC) but NFL Network can get first dibs for this.
Cons: Since a lot of teams will likely be selected more than once (Seahawks, Broncos, Niners, Cowboys, etc) in this scenario and some teams will be selected 0 times (Jaguars, Titans, Rams) you can't have the symmetrical bye week solution. Likewise, just because a game looks good on paper in April (take Pats vs. Broncos above) doesn't mean it's going to be good when that game happens. Who knows, by the time the Pats play the Broncos, the Pats could have 4 wins and starting Jimmy Garapollo and the game will only be available in New England & Denver, so it's probably good it didn't get picked up by NFL Network after all.

#3) the ability to flex schedule (same with Monday Night Football as well). If NBC can do it, why can't the NFL network do it on Thursdays?? When the schedule was released last April EVERYONE on the planet knew that week 13 Thursday night game between the Houston Texans & Jacksonville Jaguars was going to be awful. It turned out to be awful just like we all thought, but for different reasons because both teams sucked compared to only just one. So, in that case, by week 8 when they knew both teams were dumpster fires they start looking for potential replacement games for that week with an announcement 2 to 3 weeks in advance.

Bad idea. In 2008, the Ravens had their bye scheduled for week 10, which is a reasonable spot. Due to a hurricane in Houston in week 2, their matchup with the Texans got pushed to week 10 and their bye got moved to week 2. I believe they even spent most of the week preparing for the game so they didn't really have a bye. They also were a wild card in the playoffs, so they didn't get a bye in January, and they never got the time for their players to heal a bit, and it may have cost them when they got knocked out of the playoffs.

This year, Cincinnati, Denver, Seattle, and Arizona all had their bye in week 4, which is very early. These are all teams that are considered contenders this year, and we'll see how it'll affect them if they don't get a bye in January. 13 straight games + 3 playoff games before getting the week off before the Super Bowl.

There's also a difference between an 11-day bye and a 14-day bye. Then the players don't really get a full week off. Plus even if you consider 10-11 days off to be a bye, teams would get two of them, and they would occur directly before and after TNF. You would want to spread out your time off a bit for the sake of your banged up players.

It'd be better to just have a short week once in a while.

That's not very fair to the fans. The fans might spend hundreds per ticket and it's one thing for their game to get moved to a different time on the same day, but to move it to a different day of the week could cause problems for a lot of people. They only flex games on Sundays at the very end of the season anyway.

Speak to an NFL player and tell me if you have the same opinion....

it is a big deal when you play 3 NFL games in 12 days.

Do you really think the NFL gives a rats about the average fans of the NFL?

Anyone who believes that well, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell to you....lol

It started a long long time ago when most of you twenty somethings were still in diapers, and only has gotten worse over time.

It's also a pretty big deal to make (in most cases) over a million dollars in a year. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be complaining about that kind of an opportunity, even if I had to endure a rough stretch like three games in two weeks.

Hard hits don't occur in the NFL like they used to... sure, these dudes are still getting banged up, but that is what they signed up to do... and they get paid A LOT of money to do it.

I can think of several dozen occupations off the top of my head that have far greater risk and far less pay than these guys get... so I'm kind of thinking they (NFL players) should be glad they get what they do throughout their careers.

It's not just TNF games. Most primetime games have been blowouts. The only close game that comes to mind was the Jets/Bears MNF game, and I think one of the MNF games in week 1 was close.

Yes, they can't predict results. In the case of TNF, they gambled heavily on divisional games. In every division there is a first place team and a last place team. Just because it's a divisional rival doesn't mean it will be good. I'm a Browns fan, the Browns/Steelers rivalry is a big one. Yet, since return to the league in 1999, the Browns have only beat the Steelers 5 times. Betting on a divisional rivalry for primetime was a bad idea imo.

Every team plays the other 3 teams in their conference that finished in the same place in their division(ie Broncos play the other 3 teams that finished 1st in their division in the AFC). They should have used those matchups. Broncos/Colts was a good game. I'm sure Manning vs Brady should be another good game too.

The NFL should have looked into other matchups besides only divisional matchups for TNF. These games are no fun when they are over by halftime.

Hopefully the tilt down in Houston on Thursday night will be a good one. Colts-Texans should be a good match up.

The NFL does everything it can to suck monies into its coffers, so they continue to toss out all manner of hogslop with dollar signs in their eyeballs. The latest money-sucking brainchild they're pushing seems to be all about "fantasy football"...

The good news? The Cowboys-Texans game was better than expected. The NFL needs to have that particular match-up happen every year as a home and home!
