I renamed the thread because of that very reason, all the people on this list have been a head coach at one time or another. There are several that are NOT on this list and those people go back a ways, and I'll contribute to this thread later.
Honorable mention for Joe Gibbs in his comeback with the Skins. Calling back to back timeouts and his defense being penalized 15 yards because of it. Setting up Ryan Lindell and the Bills with the game winning 35yard FG instead of a possible miss from 50.

Because I started the thread, I will allow posters, for example Norv Turner, to say that he is a great offensive coordinator but a horrible head coach as well as "he's a good defensive/offensive/special teams coordinator" but a horrible head coach. That will be acceptable as long as they declare them as one of the worst NFL head coaches.
One of those is Bill Peterson who has only gotten one vote in this poll.
One of the great creations of NFL Films was the 15 "NFL Lost Classics" series (I really miss Steve Sabol BTW.") In one of them there was a 5 minute seg on Peterson with a classic one liner from him- "Pair off in groups of threes, then line up in a circle."
He coached Florida State for a decade in the 60's, got them to 3 bowl appearances. Left the Seminoles and went to Rice Univ. in 1971. And compiled a 3-7-1 record.
One has to really wonder what Oiler GM John Breen was thinking here. In 1972 Peterson took an Oiler club who just three years previous was in the AFL divisional playoff game and nosedived to a 1-13 record. After losing his first five games in 1973, Peterson was shown the door. His winning percentage was .053. Pretty brutal.

I remember that game. It was made even worse by the fact that was the first game in DC after Sean Taylor died.

After leaving William & Mary in the early 1970s he coached North Carolina State with a 33-12-3 record. He then became head coach of the New York Jets but resigned with one game left in 1976 going 3-10. He then coached Arkansas for several years before coaching the Minnesota Golden Gophers for only two years before accepting a job at Notrew Dame for at ten seasons there 1986 through 1996. After out of coaching for two years he took a job with the South Carolina Gamecocks as their head coach. He would retire again from coaching for goo after 2004 and was succeeded by Steve Spurrier.
Lou Holtz, like Bill Peterson, has only one vote in the poll.
Holtz isn't the only coach to quit an NFL team during the season. Bobby Petrino is the other one. Petrino left after Michael Vick was imprisoned for dog fighting.
Holtz was strict disciplinarian while coaching for Notre Dame.
