Why a "Wildcard round" instead of just a "Round of 16"?
Anybody know the answer to that?

I think the media coined the phrase "wild card" and it just kind of stuck.

IMO, 'wild card' is an advertizing and media hype term, used to create interest by suggesting 'Cinderella' could magically slip-into the playoffs...even though they finished the entire season in 16th (or 32nd) place. (Follow the money and the answer becomes obvious).

Similarly, 40 College 'BOWL' games create more interest (and advertizing revenue) than a bunch of ho-hum, .500 win teams tacking meaningless extra games onto the end of the season. They will probably have a 'Participation Bowl' next season!

I think in NBA, and possibly in NHL, it's too easy to make the playoffs. It's pretty common for someone in the east to make it with an under .500 record. Yes, I know this has happened in the NFL too, but it's rare. I think either 1 or 2 wild card spots per conference is the sweet spot. As to nomenclature: who cares.

how can you have a round of sixteen, when there are only twelve teams total in the playoffs?

That's the point
instead of 12 teams, make it 16 teams and make it a round of 16

It makes week 17 more exciting. There's also an interesting dynamic with how you play coming off a bye, fresh or rusty. I wouldn't have cared about the Broncos game yesterday if the bye wasn't in play. That would also put the Bills, Falcons, and Rams in the playoffs. None of those teams deserve it.

That is half the league... too many teams IMO.

Agreed. Too watered down. 14 should be the max. The number one team in each conference gets a bye. Or just leave it at 12 teams.
