Jerry Rice retired as a 49er, spent several years away from San Fran.
Agreed, but a different situation in that he did not find the success after the 49ers that he had as a 49er.
Few people could even tell you which teams and how many teams he played for after the 49ers.
KC? and Oakland? Jerry Rice as a GOAT was because of his time in SF.
And I also agree that both Indy and Peyton needed a change in 2011.
I understand the strong connection to Indy.
My mom lives blocks from the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.
But I do not see him signing a one day deal with the Colts to retire.
This isn't like Johnny Unitas, who left the (Baltimore) Colts to play one more, really bad, season in San Diego. Manning played four seasons in Denver, where the Broncos won 12 games or more and the division title every year, went to two Super Bowls, and won one of them.
Now, who does he go into the Hall of Fame as?
Different question, different answer. The Colts, where he spent most of his career, where he racked up most of his wins, and where he went to and won just as many Super Bowls as in Denver.
This is not baseball.. the NFL Hall of Famers are not WEARING A CAP.. there is simply a bust with no hat, cap, helmet or anything.. each team the player played for is denoted... So he goes into the HOF as Peyton Manning, Colt and Bronco. If he decides to resign with the Colts for 1 day and retire, that just symbolism and has nothing to do with the HOF denotation..
If I am Peyton, I am not happy with Indy. They ditched the old lady for a flashy, big breasted freshman. Peyton gave them everything and clearly wanted to continue playing as long as he could.
Do we understand their decision? Yes....it made logical sense. What I said is also true.
Thinking Peyton now feels more allegiance to the organization that gave him a second chance...and a Super Bowl victory.
I could be wrong. Was shocked to hear him loudly shill for Budweiser on two occasions....after the game. That was a big WTH moment that will tarnish his legacy a bit.
I don't think Peyton Manning is pissed at the Colts for moving on without him. The Broncos were going to do the same thing with him next year anyway, regardless. I'm thinking it comes down to how Peyton feels. He spent the majority of this career with Indy. He's had the same exact success with both teams. I can definitely see him wanting to retire as a Colt just as much as I could see him wanting to retire as a Bronco. I'd say the edge actually goes to Indy, simply because he spent the majority of his career there, and pretty much earned most of his future Hall of Fame status with Indy.
