The Raiders, with their 3-1 start, combined with the Browns and their 0-4 start, have pulled themselves up to the Browns level since both teams' last playoff appearance in 2002. That year the Browns finished 9-7 and lost a pretty epic WC game with the Steelers. The Raiders finished 11-5 and reached the Super Bowl but got ran out of the stadium by the Buccaneers.

Since then...

The Browns have accrued a 66-142 record.

The Raiders have accrued a 63-145 record.

The Browns are 0-4, so 66-146 since that last playoff season.

The Raiders are 3-1, so 66-146 since that last playoff season.

Now the Raiders are definitely looking much better than the Browns this season, but I think it's worth pointing out just how bad they've been since 2002. The Browns are the quintessential league losers, but until now they've actually been the better team between them and the Raiders.

I knew the Raiders have been bad but never quite figured they were quite on the Browns level of suckiness.

Haha, naw, this is just leftover trivia from a piece I wrote back in the summer about which team on a long playoff drought would be the most likely to break said drought this season. The longest droughts are the Bills (1999), the Raiders (2002), the Browns (2002) and the Rams (2004). I remember that Browns team from 2002 and watched them take the Steelers to the mat before falling short in that playoff game. But even though it was the same year as the Raiders last playoff appearance, it seemed as though it was so much longer ago. So as I stumbled up on that little reminder it piqued my curiosity about which team had the better record in the years since. The Raiders high point was two 8-8 seasons in 2010 and 2011, while the Browns went 10-6 in 2007 and still missed the playoffs. The Raiders went 7-9 last year but it's the approach from the front office that has given hope that they have actually turned the corner. The Browns were dismal last year but I believe they have a good coach in Hue Jackson and are loaded with young talent they can develop as a core.

As for the playoff drought, the Raiders are a team I picked to reach the playoffs this year, but I'll admit the Rams have shown some fight in the first few weeks. And the Bills? Expect anything with Rex Ryan!
