The refs are held accountable.. same as players and bad ones don't last long.
They are graded after each game.. only the top graded officials get to officiate in the playoffs. Not sure what else you could do other than to fine them but that's dumb... Players don't get fined for dropping passes, missing tackles, etc...

ESPN has a poll on twitter, asking if this is the worst call of 2016:

RULED A CATCH

I see some atrocious calls, seems much more prevalent this year and these include missed and made calls. I also see MORE calls (I think).

The thing you want to be aware of and watch games with this in mind ... calls are made that affect the flow of the game ... big plays called back because of some tic tac holding (that could be called on every play if the refs wanted to) or tic tac PI. The defensive holding call keeps many drives alive but can be called almost every pass play with todays bump and run pass D. While watching the game ask why or what benefits the NFL storyline. The zebras control the game.

It helps your objectivity if you're not emotionally involved in the game(s).

The thing is, only the good officiating crew works the playoffs. Thebad officiating crew cannot.

Officiating is so bad now that I am scared to celebrate my team's defense getting a stop on 3rd down because I think I will see a flag. lol

And I know we all seen a NFL ref throw a flag after the pass was incomplete and hits the ground which always screamed fraudulent.

Officiating is also the reason why you can't predict who is going to the SB because we have no clue if the refs are going to throw bogus flags. I seen one flag flip an entire NFL game which is awful to have happen in a playoff game.

LOL. YOu always look or worry about flags on crucial downs. It happens less than you think, but when it does happen.. ITS HUGE!

When I was younger I had a habit of saying, "good we got the ball back" after the defense got a stop only to see it was a flag and I started slamming things and cursing. lol
