Are we seeing the Pro Bowl come to an end? More & more players are declining not for injury reasons but lack of interest.
After being with your team for about +20 weeks (training camp to week 17) I can understand why a lot of players don't want to take a long flight to Hawaii.
It's been forever since I saw the Pro Bowl but remember hearing a lot of people say how it's just a joke that the amount of effort in the game is very low.
Do you think they should continue this?
Would they get better turn outs if it meant playing on the main land (different city/stadium each year just like in MLB). This would mean less travel for the players + I think fan turn out would be better since this would give fans a chance to see the better players in the league play.
I think the bottom line is football is a sport with far to great of an injury risk to ever have any kind of meaningful game anymore. Sure, first and second time players will go still. But the majority of players who reach that superstar status, especially QBs, will just opt out now. Wouldn't be surprised at all if owners were paying their star players not to go.
And with the players that do go and play, you get a vanilla watered down game because nobody wants to get hurt. Rightfully so.
That said, this might be the first Pro Bowl i tune into in years since Tyrod Taylor will likely get a decent amount of playing time.
If the players want to go to Hawaii they have enough money and time to go there on their dime during the off-season. I think Super Bowl week should be kicked off by hosting the Pro Bowl. It could be at that year's location or the next location, so for this year as an example Santa Clara or Houston.
I personally never watch it. Not "real" football, but just an All-Star game that many players (like all the Pats players this year) don't seem to care that much about. With the Baseball All-Star game my favorite part and only thing I watch is the home run derby. I would be more interested seeing things like long field goals and punts, longest throws and catches, maybe throwing at targets, etc. I know though it would be difficult to find something for every position, like what would an OL or DL compete in?
It all went down hill when they started mixing players from different conferences on the same team. The Pro Bowl lost it's integrity and it's now become too gimmicky for me to watch. "Team Rice vs. Team Irvin" What a complete joke!
We've brought this up before, the competition they had years ago, with different skill sets. It was fun seeing players trying to do things not necessarily their area of expertise. Kicking, running, throwing, obstacle course, it was great, I always watched it. Seeing some of the big guys trying to get up and over a wall was interesting!
I do watch the Pro Bowl, sort of, mainly to see if any key players sustain an injury, twisting a knee or something.
I have been an avid NFL fan for 40+ years and I have never, not once, watched a Pro Bowl game....
It should have died a long time ago
